Ocean Omega Fish Oil Good For Your Pets Health

CRF Kidney Disease and other Inflammatory Problems

Holistic foods often do not make special needs medical diets, and unfortunately, animals with kidney problems, diabetes, and pancreatitis CANNOT eat the dry holistic brands because they have too much protein, carbs, fat, or phosphorus. The veterinary brands get their protein sources from grains and in that case, it’s what is needed for our poor babies.
But there is a lot of veterinary research on the use of fish oil to treat the inflammation that is often found in the the kidney, pancreas, etc., and so that is something that you CAN do for your pets.
fish oil for pets:

Fish oil is good for dogs – and cats! Veterinarians first used omega-3 fatty acids in the form of fish oil to treat canine allergies but now recommend it for a wide variety of conditions ranging from kidney disease to arthritis and high cholesterol. Adding fish oil to your dog’s food provides anti-inflammatory effects and can help relieve itching due to atopic dermatitis, an allergy-related skin condition.

The Veterinary College at Colorado State University found that fish oil helped with toenail loss in dogs!

Toenail Loss In Dogs - Lupoid onychodystrophy is a disease in dogs that causes them to lose their toenails. A research team studied the effect of fatty acid supplementation (for example, fish oil or primrose oil) in treating dogs with this condition. This study compared the fatty acid concentrations in the blood and nails of normal and affected dogs. Studies showed an improvement in the conditions of dogs with lupoid onychodystrophy, but researchers don’t know if the improvement is due to the anti-inflammatory characteristics of fatty acids or if affected dogs developed the condition because of a fatty acid deficiency.

Thanks to medical advances, cats are now able to survive some conditions and illnesses that were once fatal. But these same problems — hyperthyroidism, heart problems, urinary tract obstruction, and diabetes can damage the kidneys. Strays are at particular risk, since they are more likely to have been exposed to toxins that can damage the kidneys, as are aging cats since their kidneys may not function very well.

Omega-3 fatty acids may help improve kidney function. Be sure to supplement with fish oil, not flax seed oil, since cats can’t convert the linoleic acid in flax seed oil to the final form, arachidonic acid.

Quality Counts

So, in the wake of all these acute kidney failures, there is at least ONE more healthy thing that you can do for your pets.

Thanks to medical advances, cats are now able to survive some conditions and illnesses that were once fatal. But these same problems -- hyperthyroidism, heart problems, urinary tract obstruction, and diabetes can damage the kidneys. Strays are at particular risk, since they are more likely to have been exposed to toxins that can damage the kidneys, as are aging cats since their kidneys may not function very well.

What causes kidney disease?

Twenty percent of the blood flows through the kidneys with every heart beat, and toxins concentrate in the kidneys so that they can be excreted. Therefore, the kidneys are exposed to more toxins than most other organs. Some of the most notable chemicals that can damage the kidneys are pesticides, herbicides, solvents, and bee venom. Use of natural products around the house will help decrease your cat's exposure to these toxins.

Of the blood going to the kidneys, most is filtered through, so little goes to nourish the kidney tissue itself. Because of this, the kidneys are damaged by anything that decreases blood flow, such as shock, heart problems, trauma, and prolonged anesthesia. Other risk factors for kidney disease are dehydration, high fever, hypotension, acidosis, and electrolyte imbalance.

Some commonly used antibiotics, insecticides, and chemotherapy can also have a damaging effect on the kidneys. Any medications that have the potential to harm the kidneys should be administered in the evening, when a cat's natural nocturnal cycle is at its strongest.

The over-vaccination problem

Over-vaccination may contribute to auto-immune problems by overstimulating the immune system. As the number of vaccines increase, the number of kinds and cases of auto-immune disease increase.

Kidney problems may be caused by a mild form of auto-immune disease. It is possible that antibody-antigen complexes may damage capillary beds in the kidneys and contribute to kidney disease. It is not unreasonable to suspect that excessive vaccination may contribute to kidney failure.

Fatty acids are among the most commonly used nutritional supplements used in treating dogs and cats. Fortunately, they have been used successfully long enough that most conventional veterinarians include their usage in the treatment of at least some diseases.

Medicinal fatty acids are divided into omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. In general, omega-6 fatty acids tend to promote inflammation, whereas omega-3 fatty acids act to reduce inflammation. As such, omega-3 fatty acids are used in diseases in which anti-inflammatory activity is needed. The fatty acids can substitute for medications such as corticosteroids in the treatment of inflammation.

The most commonly used supplements that provide fatty acids are fish oil and flax seed oil. While flax seed oil contains more omega-3’s than fish oil, the omega-3’s found in flax seed oil are in an inactive form. The omega-3’s found in fish oil are in an active form. In research studies, fish oil has shown positive benefits in helping people and pets with disease, whereas flax seed oil has not been as beneficial. For this reason, fish oil is generally recommended as the omega-3 fatty acid supplement of choice.

The active omega-3’s, (eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)) are derived from fish oils of coldwater fish (salmon, trout, or most commonly menhaden fish.) Also called linseed oil, flaxseed oil is derived from the seeds of the flax plant and has been proposed as a less smelly alternative to fish oil. Flaxseed oil contains alpha-linolenic acid (ALA,) an omega-3 fatty acid that is ultimately converted to EPA and DHA. In fact, flax seed oil contains higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids (ALA) than fish oil. It also contains omega-6 fatty acids.

Similar to the situation with fish oil, pets with inflammatory diseases may respond to supplementation with flax seed oil. However, many species of pets (probably including dogs and cats) and some people cannot efficiently convert ALA to the more active non-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA.) In one study in people, flax seed oil was ineffective in reducing symptoms or raising levels of EPA and DHA. In pets with kidney disease, flax seed oil was not as effective as fish oil. While flaxseed oil has been suggested as a substitute for fish oil, there is no evidence that it is effective when used for the same therapeutic purposes as fish oil. Unlike the case for fish oil, there is little evidence that flax seed oil is effective for any specific therapeutic purpose with the following exceptions. Flax seed oil can improve the coat and skin of pets. Also, the lignans contained in flax seed oil may have anti-cancer benefits.

Fish oil supplementation may be helpful for pets with inflammatory diseases including allergies, arthritis, kidney disease, heart disease, and cancers. People with diabetes may have fatty acid derangement and require supplementation; this may also be true in pets. Fish oil has demonstrated benefits in people and pets with allergies, kidney disease, and heart disease. It has also shown benefits as an anti-depressant in people with mild depression. Fish oil appears to have benefits in pets with arthritis as well. Pets with any type of inflammatory disease may benefit from fish oil supplementation. In general, more severe disease requires doses higher than those commonly recommended and often additional supplements are necessary as fish oil is not often useful as the only supplement.

Fish oil is very effective in some pets with allergic skin disease. It can reduce the amount of corticosteroid or antihistamine needed to control itching. The response is variable in other diseases (such as kidney disease) but fish oil appears effective in research studies. In pets with some types of cancer, fish oil has slowed down the growth and spread of the cancer. While more studies are needed on other types of cancer, the general recommendation is to add fish oil to the diets of all pets with cancer.

While there is concern about the contamination of fish meat with environmental contaminants such as mercury, this concern does not apply to fish oil. Supplementation with fish oil can result in decreased levels of vitamin E; therefore, fish oil supplements have extra vitamin E added to them.

Safety
Fish oil supplementation is very safe. The most common side effect seen in people and pets is a fish odor to the breath or the skin. Because fish oil has a mild “blood-thinning” effect, it should not be combined with powerful blood-thinning medications, such as Coumadin (warfarin) or heparin, except on a veterinarian's advice. Fish oil does not seem to cause bleeding problems when it is taken by itself at commonly recommended dosages. In people, a high dose of fish oil (4 grams or more each day) when combined with ginkgo biloba has caused serious bleeding problems. Fish oil does not appear to raise blood sugar levels in people or pets with diabetes despite earlier concerns about this. Flax oil does not appear to cause “blood thinning.”

Essential Fatty Acids

"The Good Fats - EPA & DHA"

The "good fats" or "healing fats" are the fats that
we must obtain in order to be healthy. The key components of healing fats
are the essential fatty acids - EPA & DHA. There are several different
families of fatty acids but only two of these families are considered essential
because the body must have them, but cannot make them. Essential fatty
acids (EFAs) must come from foods. EFAs (particularly, DHA & EPA) play
a critical role in the proper functioning of almost all of the major systems
in the body.
(additional information on EFAs)

Ocean Omega
Omega 3 Fish Oils with Natural Vitamin E

Ocean Omega Gold_.jpgbottle-gold.png

Essential Fatty Acid Families:

1. Superunsaturated Omega 3 Family
· Alpha-linolenic Acid (LNA)

2. Polyunsaturated Omega 6 Family
· Linoleic Acid (LA)

Even though both of these fatty acids are
considered essential in the diet and we (pets
and people) can't live without them, it is
also critical that they are consumed in a
properly balanced ratio. This ratio should
be around 2:1 Omega 6 to Omega 3. However,
experts agree that the diets of both people
and pets are providing an excessive amount
of Omega 6 (LA) and little, if any, Omega
3. An imbalance as great as 20:1 is extremely
common with the high consumption of overly-processed
foods and very little whole, raw and fresh
foods being incorporated into the modern
diet. This imbalance has been proven to be
a factor in most of the degenerative diseases
that are common in our pets today. By adding a high quality source of Omega
3 to the diet, we can prevent or alleviate
many of these diseases
.

There are two basic sources of Omega 3 essential
fatty acids:

1. Plant based sources, such as flax seed,
hemp seed, soybeans, walnuts, etc. (Sources
of LNA)

2. Cold water fish oils. (Direct source of EPA and DHA)

Plant sources contain the parent omega 3
essential fatty acid, Alpha-linolenic acid
(LNA), which must be converted in the body
to Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic
Acid (DHA) in order to perform most of their
critical functions. The body requires approximately
10 LNA to produce 1 EPA. This conversion
can be difficult or impossible for some older
animals or those with degenerative conditions
and weakened immune systems. Unfortunately
these are the animals that need it the most.
Taking into consideration this conversion
factor, it becomes necessary to consume a
lot more of the plant sources in order to
get the required daily allowance. If palatability
is low, this can be extremely challenging.

On the other hand, cold water fish oils are a readily available abundant
& direct source of both EPA and DHA, eliminating the need for this
conversion in the body. Fish oils also tend to be a much more palatable
source for animals. Both dogs and cats absolutely love the taste, which
makes it easy and enjoyable to administer.

Ocean Omega 3 Fish Oils are the richest source
of EPA and DHA!

ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS

Gallon-132x199.jpg

Essential Fatty Acids and their derivatives
serve a number of major vital functions in
the body. They are required for the transport
and metabolism of both cholesterol and triglycerides.
They are required for normal brain development
and brain function. They are required in
visual function (retina), brain and nerve
function (synapses), and adrenal function.
They are required in the structure of the
membranes that surround each cell in our
body. They stimulate metabolism, increase
metabolic rate, increase oxygen uptake, and
increase energy production. They slow down
growth of cancer cells.

DHA (from fish oil) has been shown to be a key in neural development.
Research, unveiled at the 2004 American Veterinary Medical Association
convention, examined the role DHA (a long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated
fatty acid) - plays in puppies' neural development.

The research shows "that puppies nourished with enhanced
(high) levels of dietary docosahexaenoic
acid (DHA) were smarter, more trainable than typical-DHA (low-DHA) nourished
puppies."

DHA is one of the most abundant fatty acids in the brain, and thought to be
vital for mental function.  DHA has
long been praised as a wonder nutrient for human infants and now it's been found
to boost healthy brain development in puppies.

DHA, and its companion,
EPA, are the forms of omega-3 essential fatty acids naturally available in fish
oils -- for optimum utilization.

EPA (from fish oil) also converts to series
3 prostaglandins, which have many benefits.
They regulate inflammatory responses (Skin
and Joint). They regulate immune function,
which can help in fighting disease more effectively.
They regulate platelet stickiness. They regulate
arterial muscle tone, which involves blood
pressure regulation.

The series 1 & 2 prostaglandins have
the exact opposite effect on the body as
the series 3. They stimulate inflammation,
constrict the arteries, make platelets stickier,
and inhibit immune response. That is the
reason why a properly balanced ratio of Omega
3 to Omega 6 is so critical. In essence they
keep each other in check.

In conclusion, the lack of Omega 3 and the
excessive amount of Omega 6 in the modern
diet ultimately create degenerative conditions.
The store-bought processed foods still do
not supply an adequate amount of Omega 3
to properly balance the ratio. Many nutritional
supplements are still promoting and loading
up the Omega 6 (LA) fatty acids -exacerbating
an already severely imbalanced and unhealthy
situation. The best solution to insure our
pet's health is to provide a high quality
Omega 3 Fish oil supplement along with a
premium food.

Equine Fish Oil

This is a natural pure form of menhaden fish oil  available.  Natural  flavorings have been added  to
enhance taste  EFA’s (Essential Fatty Acids) are the good fats that are essential for everyday
optimum health. They are essential to every cell and play a critical role in immune, cardiovascular,
and nerve function. They are essential because the body cannot produce them, therefore
supplementation is necessary. Deficiencies of the essential fatty acids create problems with coat,
skin, immune function and reproduction.

Today many  horses are loaded with Omega 6 which can be pro-inflammatory and are extremely
depleted of Omega 3 which are anti-inflammatory creating an unbalance. Omega 3 fatty acids
control many of the most basic functions of the cell. Cellular circulation is deeply affected by the
intake of fatty acids, which in turn affects the fluidity of the cell membrane. Increasing the Omega 3
content of the diet significantly increases cell-membrane fluidity and hence allows more nutrients
to reach the cells themselves. Every cell in every organism has an innate (genetic) program for
building health. The program can do its job if given the proper tools. These tools are essential
nutrients. Without Omega 3 fatty acids even the best genes cannot build healthy cells. Multiple
benefits from fat sources high in Omega 3 fatty acids, particularly eicosapentaeonoic acid (EPA)
and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

Beneficial effects include decreasing blood lipid concentrations and increasing membrane fluidity
and insulin sensitivity. Omega 3 fish oil with EPA/DHA provides great benefits to cells, cardiac,
brain, joint, skin and digestive systems. Pure cellular support! Enriching diets with essential
nutrients from nature enables cells to fix their defects or recycle damaged ones, and return to
normal functions. If we know the components of health (essential nutrients) and design a program
containing these components of health in optimum quantities, the animals cure themselves.
Omega 3 fish oil the key building blocks in every cell membrane in the body. It appears that proper
fats and oil nutrition are coming to the forefront for balanced and optimal nutrition.

Ocean Omega Prepare and Protect Your Pet For Warm Weather

dog with a fan.jpg Well with another impending rainy snowy ice storm predicted for tomorrow, believe it or not, supposedly warm weather is around the corner? In regards to when the warm weather does decide to arrive, we should consider the following pet healthcare tips.

Pet Care Tips for the Forthcoming Warm Weather
While warm weather is welcomed by most people, spring and summer can bring certain dangers to pets.

dp_heat_wave.jpg

Heat exhaustion is a common ailment of pets during summer months.

It's best to exercise pets during the morning or evening hours to avoid the direct sun. It's also crucial to have plenty of fresh water available and shade for protection. Cats tend to handle heat better than dogs, but both should be given extra care.

The intense light from the summer sun can damage your pet's skin, including sunburn.

Pets with lighter-colored coats, especially white or shaved animals, need to be kept out of intense light . It's best to keep pets in the shade during peak hours and use sunscreen or a protective jacket. Repeated sun exposure often leads to a serious form of cancer in white cats. Owners should be aware of red patchy areas on the ears and nose.

Summer heat can be a danger to pets' food as well.

Like people, pets naturally eat less during warm weather; however it's important to watch for pet food spoilage in the heat . Canned food should not be left out after feeding because of the warm weather and the amount of insects it will attract.

Allergies are common in the spring, both for humans and pets.

Cats and dogs can have seasonal allergies just like us, especially during the spring from pollen and grass . While some do sneeze and have watery eyes, most pets show allergies through skin rashes and itching, sometimes making the animal miserable. If your pet is being bothered by allergies, you should contact your veterinarian for advice.

Fleas and ticks are health concerns year-round for pet owners, although summer months intensify the problem.

There are numerous diseases that come from fleas and ticks that harm cats, dogs and people, so prevention is very important. Pet owners should also be aware of mosquito, chigger and fly bites which can be irritating and are especially common on outdoor animals.

shaved dog.jpg
Shaving their coats may be beneficial to some pets.

There are some benefits from shaving your pet's hair. It prevents mats, which can be a hiding place for maggots, and it can make them more comfortable in the heat. It's easier to locate ticks and fleas if the coat is trimmed and it's more comfortable for the animal. The warm weather also makes it easier to bathe pets as it can be done outdoors without a chance of chilling your pet and less mess in your tub.

Rainy weather sometimes leads to standing water, which puts pets at more risk to contract the dangerous disease leptospirosis. Pet owners should be cautious of their pet's environment, including standing water in the animal's area.

Many pet owners travel during the summer and are faced with deciding what to do with pets.
There is the option of boarding your cat or dog. Be sure that your pet is updated on all vaccines and make reservations well ahead of the day. If leaving a pet with family or friends, be sure they know the pet's routine, have the phone number for your vet available and give them signed consent form so your vet can do what's needed in case of an emergency.

If your pet is traveling with you, have a health certificate. Try taking short trips and try tranquilizing medication before long trips. It's also helpful to bring comforting items from home as well as food and any medications. Always make sure your pet has some type of identification such as tags, tattoos or a micro chip. Ocean Omega Products will help Promote Good Health In Your Pets during ALL the seasons of the year.

Declaw Or Not To Declaw That Is The Question?

This is the Question: To Declaw or Not Declaw?

I was recently asked about declawing for cats. The individual asking knows I am a longtime owner of two wonderful brother cats who just turned 18 years old.
Harry_in_The_Window-111x81.jpgmax.jpg

I must preface the following factoids with the disclaimer that I am not a doctor/veterinarian, and I don't play one on television either. However, speaking from first hand experience; we made a conscious decision that our two boys would be lifelong indoor cats ( this is part n partible contributory to their longevity) so we had them declawed when they were very young. My cats are very happy and contented so the procedure worked fine for us.

Having said that;many cat owners have made declawing part of the "new kitten" routine, along with vaccines and spaying or neutering. However, a large portion of the cat-loving community is opposed to this practice.

According to Dr. Tobin Eshelman, surgery resident at the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Urbana, declawing is a procedure that, like any elective surgery, has pros and cons.

Because this is a procedure that requires general anesthesia, many pet owners choose to have it done at the same time as a spay or neuter. The procedure itself involves the removal of the cat's nail and, with it, amputation of the third phalanx (last of three bones) in each digit of the animal's forepaw.

Many cat enthusiasts are opposed to the practice. Some pet lovers, including some veterinarians, maintain that a cat may have permanent trouble walking or balancing after a declaw procedure, and that a cat's personality may change since its claws, which are a natural defense, are removed.

Dr. Eshelman explains that there is a small incidence of complications associated with the procedure surgery, such as infection of the surgery site, recurrent lameness, or incomplete removal of the third phalanx, which can be a source of pain and, rarely, nail regrowth.

As with most surgeries, there's also the issue of post-operative pain. It's difficult to assess how painful a cat's forepaws feel after the procedure, since cats are unable to verbally describe their discomfort. Determining pain levels for animals is a matter of human interpretation, and many people feel that a declaw procedure is more painful than other elective surgeries.

"The veterinary community has come a long way in the past ten years in improving our pain assessment and pain management techniques," Dr. Eshelman points out, "so post-operative pain associated with the declaw procedure can be recognized and managed more effectively than it used to be." Clinical research has shown that new combinations of trans-dermal patches, local nerve blocks, oral anti-inflammatory drugs, and injectable drugs can significantly reduce signs of pain in cats when used in combination with the traditional injectable and oral pain medications.

Some cat lovers believe that declawing cats can also affect their demeanor and behavior, since scratching is a natural behavior that provides exercise, a natural form of defense, and enjoyment.

Dr. Eshelman says, "Some cats look at their paws and bat them around shortly after surgery; it is difficult to tell whether they are painful or simply resenting the thick boxing-glove bandaging around the paws. In my experience, once the bandages are removed, few owners report emotional trauma or abnormal behavior in their cats. Also, declawing is not recommended for cats that will spend any time outdoors, since they lose the defensive function of their nails."

Once a cat is declawed, it's important to provide it with plenty of toys and activities that mimic their predatory chasing behavior. This may offset boredom or inactivity if it stops scratching.

Dr. Eshelman understands the many reasons people may oppose declawing, but he explains that a declaw procedure can improve the human-pet relationship if a cat constantly destroys furniture or harms family members with its claws.

Another veterinarian at the University of Illinois Teaching Hospital, whose cats were declawed past the kitten stage, did not witness a change in their demeanor. "I used to feel that declawing was cruel, but I when I finally had it done to two of my cats, I found that it really improved my mood and my relationship with them. I didn't realize how much their scratching behavior was stressing me out, making me a cranky, bad pet owner."

Both veterinarians recommend that if a pet owner decides to have their cat declawed, that they get the procedure done while the cat is young, since a younger cat may adapt better to the change.

If a pet owner believes that declawing isn't right for their cats, there are several alternatives, both surgical and non-surgical, to minimize destructive scratching behaviors. Another surgery option is deep digital flexor tendonectomy, a less invasive procedure in which the tendon that extends the claws outward are cut, so the cat still has its full digits but cannot extend its claws. Regular nail trimming is still required after this procedure, but most cats are not able to be as destructive with permanently retracted claws.

Simply trimming a cat's nails regularly can minimize the damage those nails can cause. Training your cat to use a scratching post can deter your cat from scratching furniture and provides exercise and enjoyment. Other play activities, such as chasing toys or laser pointers, can also exercise a cat's predatory instincts.

Dr. Eshelman also likes a product on the market called "Soft Paws," soft-tipped plastic covers that slip over a cat's nails. They simply glue on and last several weeks. Cats may take a few days to get used to them, but once they do, they can scratch as they normally would without damaging furniture or harming family members.

Dr. Eshelman sums up, "When it comes down to a pet owner getting stressed out and frustrated with his cats' scratching, I'd rather see the cat without front claws than see the cat without a home."

For more information about declawing and alternatives, consult your veterinarian.

The Birds, and The Bees, and The Flowers and The Trees, and The Moon up above:

birds.jpgbees.jpgbees and butterflies.jpgtrees.jpgdeer.jpgmoon.jpg

Creating A Backyard Wildlife Sanctuary

One of my long standing Ocean Omega clients lives in very rural Virginia, and she is not only a breeder of Argentine Dogos, but also a most compassionate animal lover. She has meticulously worked to provide her land as a safe haven animal sanctuary. Being a pet owner, and animal lover and animal rights advocate myself since early childhood (boy was that a long time ago=early childhood), I often think about what we have done to animal habitat as a whole. Especially with urban sprawl, mini mall development, etc. I live in a condo association that has limited access and "backyard" space available for animal sanctuary consideration. Therefore, I try to do what I can, such as provide bird feeders in the nearby fields, bird baths, feed old bread crumbs and bird seed to the birds, squirrels, and such. For those of you folks that are fortunate enough to perhaps have good acreage, please consider helping the animals, by creating your own "Backyard Animal Sanctuary".

A backyard sanctuary usually is enhanced by having trees, shrubs, flowers, grasses and features like water, shelter and space that attract and sustain wildlife in both urban and rural areas.

Providing food – Having a variety of food sources in your yard can attract many kinds of wildlife. Providing a good mix of plants that produce seeds or fruits at different times of the year can be most beneficial. Insects are a very important part of the diet of songbirds, so try to avoid insecticides on your gardens and shubbery.

Providing a good water source – will have animals walking, flying or crawling great distances for a drink because water is essential to them. Water is also needed for bathing so animals can keep clean and thus warm or cool. A birdbath or other form of water will serve as a magnet to many kinds of wildlife.

Providing shelter – wildlife must have safe places to rest, escape danger, get out of bad weather and raise their offsprings. Most animals find shelter in trees or shrubs. Property owners might consider utilizing buffers of dense vegetation between wildlife areas and busy areas like driveways, workshops, garages, and the like.

Providing space – Most birds and mammals need more area than the average backyard can provide. This doesn’t necessarily mean they won’t visit or nest in your yard. An animal’s space requirements may be less if the resources are abundant and concentrated in a good backyard habitat. Encouraging your friends and neighbors to provide wildlife habitat will increase the collective space available for wildlife.

Habitat should include ...

  • Such food sources as – seeds, berries, nuts, flower nectar, and insects.
  • Some sources of water could include – birdbaths, drip faucets, sprinklers, ponds, puddles, and streams.

Is your cat cranky? Lazy? or inactive? Truthfully, it may not be any of those at all. It may mean that he is just simply in pain! Joint pain in cats is a major problem. And can lead to weight gain, lack of energy and even affect their overall mood!

Ocean Omega’s Glucosamine Plus for Cats is specifically designed for Cats! It contains nutrients for healthy cartilage, bones, tendons, and ligaments. For long-term joint health and range of motion, no other “Glucosamine” formula is more complete!

Your Cat’s joints are the same as your joints; they are made up of 4 major components: cartilage, fluid, tendons and ligaments.

Cartilage is the cushioning between the bones that act as shock absorbers. The building block of healthy cartilage is glucosamine. Just like you, your cat ’s body naturally produces glucosamine. As your pet ages it’s body gradually produces less glucosamine and the cartilage between the joint can deteriorate, leaving your dog in pain. When you give your pet glucosamine you are replacing this deficit and promoting healthy joints.

Fluid is also needed to lubricate the joint and allow it to move freely. Chondroitin and Manganese do this by drawing fluid in around the joints and help to keep it there.

Tendons and Ligaments are the components most joint supplements forget about! Tendons and ligaments are a vital part of the joint. ENP includes ingredients like Horsetail, Proline, Boron and Grape Seed to promote stronger, healthier connective tissue.

Another aspect to consider is the pain and inflammation that can be associated with joint problems. We also include MSM in our formula. Research has shown that MSM has strong anti-inflammatory properties, helping to put your pet at ease while the other nutrients go to work.

Introducing Ocean Omega To Raw Diet Proponents

doggie friend.jpg

I recently had a nice telephone conversation with a friend, client, and fellow business associate about his connection with a local raw diet for dogs buying group. He is a member of this group, and feeds his own dog a raw diet, and he feeds his dog our Ocean Omega Fish Oil as an ingredient within the diet.
dog eating raw meat.jpg

LIAISON1.jpg
He has been kind enough to offer being a liaison to the buying groups' coordinators in assisting us to introduce our Ocean Omega Fish Oil products to the group and its members. We currently have several Ocean Omega Fish Oil clients that are proponents of the raw diet, that are indeed utilizing our Ocean Omega Fish Oil as a key component and ingredient in their own respective custom raw diets.

raw diet 1.jpg

I would welcome the readers of this blog to contribute both their viewpoints on the raw diet, and I would be most enthused to strike a conversation with any raw diet buying group members, who may be interested in including our Ocean Omega Fish Oil into their dogs diets. Individuals who may not be members of a group are most certainly also encouraged to contact me.

discounts.jpgI have continually written articles in this blog regarding my attempts to offer various cost savings programs for our Ocean Omega Fish Oil, and we always welcome any buying groups that may be seeking a volume discounted price program. We have had the good fortune to do a synonomous type "group purchase" program, with several of our "musher clients" that purchase our Ocean Omega Fish Oil for their sled dog teams.

Please feel free to contact me directly if you, or your buying group would be interested in exploring these types of programs.

Even Chickens are Reaping The Benefits of Ocean Omega Fish Oil

Omega Eggs.jpgOmega Eggs Nutrition Facts.jpghens.jpg
Quote from an Ocean Omega Client
"On another note I have been feeding the chickens Ocean Omega Fish Oil in a mash.
They are very large fluffy chickens with the cutest butts and the eggs are so rich from the organic feed and Ocean Omega Fish Oil . As most of you know I have been raising chickens for eggs only and have used Omega 3 for my hens. They are big and fluffy and very healthy. They are producing lots of big rich eggs. These eggs are fed to my dogs and me and some of my friends buy the excess of which there is much. This has been a fun project and while it has not been done for income the hens have earned a few dollars and their money will be used in the Springtime to enlarge their grazing area and buy them some red worms. These worms will be in the raised garden beds to enhance the soil and will also be fed to the chickens as they earned them.

The interesting thing about this project is now one of my close friends in Texas is now going to do the same thing. She has ordered her chicks and is now in the process of building a coop/yard for them.

The cost of eggs in the stores is climbing almost every day. These eggs are storage eggs and are not fresh. They cost a lot and are usable but the difference between a fresh egg and a cold storage egg is major.

We tend to overlook the value of the egg. It is an almost perfect food.

There are no animals that are not important including the lowly chicken. We fancy ourselves as being at the top of the food chain but I have to wonder as we offer nothing of value to the system. We are predators and therefore claim the prize but the lowly chicken produces an egg that sustains life. "

Will Be Available in Gallon and 1 Qt. Sizes!

Glucosamine Plus addresses healthy joints like no other formula. It contains nutrients for healthy cartilage, bones, tendons, and ligaments. For long-term joint health and range of motion, no other Glucosamine formula is more complete!

Glucosamine is easily absorbed and contains vital nutrients needed for healthy joints. It promotes production of the fluid that lubricates joints and inhibits the cells that cause inflammation. Ocean Omegas' glucosamine is derived from grain, for horses with allergies or owners who prefer a vegetable source instead of shellfish.

Chondroitin is used to lubricate joints and often combined with Glucosamine for a synergistic effect. Research has shown that MSM has anti-inflammatory properties. When combined with Glucosamine, the organic sulfur from MSM helps stabilize joint cartilage and protects it from damage.

Manganese is a cofactor needed for the production of mucopolysaccharides (glycosaminoglycans) essential for joint lubrication. Grape Seed Extract is a powerful antioxidant that works synergistically with Glucosamine and MSM.

Glucosamine Plus contains natural Silica from Horsetail herb, plus the amino acid Proline to promote strong connective tissues. Boron is added to aid in Calcium absorption and bone density. These nutrients add an extra dimension in supporting joint health.

Ocean Omega Healthy Products for your Cat

Oil_in_da_Cat2-237x120.jpg

Hepatic lipidosis, also known as fatty liver syndrome, is an accumulation of fat in the liver and is a very common and very serious occurrence in fat cats who are not eating. This disease is deadly if not addressed, but almost always treatable and curable when presented to a veterinarian in its early stages.

Why would a fat cat not be eating? Ideas: "Bad teeth." "Intestinal blockage" "Stress." Cats like their food because they can smell it. So if a cat can't smell its food, it's not going to eat. What could cause a cat to lose its sense of smell? Answer:Upper respiratory infection.

Absolutely. Cats get upper respiratory infections all the time. So you have a fat cat that gets the flu and can't smell. The cat stops eating. What is the body's reaction going to be? Answer:Mobilization of fat to the liver.

You have anorexia in the presence of abundant fat stores. The body will try to feed itself by moving body fat stores to the liver to be converted into fuel. The liver can't handle this fatty saturation and liver dysfunction ensues . This doesn't happen to thin cats. They don't have enough fat available to mobilize and create this problem.

If your cat got an upper respiratory infection and stopped eating, he/she would be a prime candidate for hepatic lipidosis. If you don't bring your pet into a vet and the cat gets hepatic lipidosis, death is likely.

You can hospitalize the cat and feed it through a tube. You could also encourage eating utilizing our Ocean Omega Gold, which has a slight aromatic essence of fish, to be added to your cats food-something your cat could sniff through its cold. Smearing some food with our fish oil added; on a paw is another means of encouragement. Even if your cat will not eat, it will still clean itself.

After your cat has recovered from hepatic lipidosis or before your fat cat gets hepatic lipidosis, you should put your cat on a veterinarian-recommended low-calorie diet.Encourage exercise via catnip or toys. Monitor your cat's intake carefully in times of stress (for example, the addition of a new pet). Weigh your cat weekly to make sure it is losing weight.

By slimming your cat down, you could save him from hepatic lipidosis and other life-threatening diseases related to cat obesity.

Millions of obese pets mirror the American obesity epidemic
According to the American Association of Obesity, 64.5% of adult Americans (about 127 million) are categorized as being overweight or obese. But this epidemic isn't just affecting humans. More than 40% of American household pets are overweight or obese, leading to a steady rise in insurance claims for pet illnesses that can be obesity-related, according to actuarial data released by Veterinary Pet Insurance Co./DVM Insurance Agency (VPI), the nation's oldest and largest health insurance provider for pets.

It's shocking to learn that overweight owners are three times more likely to have overweight pets. Pets are becoming obese by the millions, and as Americans continue to adopt a more sedentary and pampered lifestyle, so will our pets. Along with this increase in weight, VPI is seeing an increase in claims for pet illnesses that are often obesity-related, such as diabetes.”

According to most recent data, there has been an annual steady climb in the percentage of total claims that relate to the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus.bottle oil in the cat.jpgPlus_G_Cat-240x166 Feline Gluco.jpgauto ship.jpg

Ocean Omega Sea Vegetables for Pet Nutrients

Marine PhytoChemicals Ocean Omega Sea Vegetables

We are exploring options to perhaps soon provide Sea Vegetables from the cold waters of our own Maine Seacoast, to add to our array of holistic pet healthcare products.

The body of our pets can be a self-healing mechanism given the proper raw
materials. There is no silver bullet for any chronic disease. One must
systematically turn on the animals brain's neurochemicals to activate the
pituitary that activates the endocrine system that controls the rest of the
organs. The pets immune system must be prompted to clean the liver and
gall bladder and get it able to eliminate toxins. Most of these vasculitis
syndromes are due to toxins that the liver can't excrete. Then you must
supply the animals body with total nutrition so it can rebuild itself.
"Phytochemicals" in kelp and other sea vegetables have been shown to absorb
and eliminate radioactive elements and heavy metal contaminants from the
body, as well as reduce the
onset, frequency and size of tumors in laboratory experiments.

The nutrients in cultivated marine phytoplankton contain a wide range of trace elements, vitamins, organic minerals, amino acids, essential fatty acids, enzymes, carotenoids, chlorophyll, and cellular material not found in other super green foods, including many important elements that are now deficient in the animals body, such as selenium and sulfur. They are also a source of those essential Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids.

Consuming even a small amount of phytonutrients from marine phytoplankton per day enhances your body's ability to regain its natural state of health.

Phytonutrients from Marine Phytoplankton offer potentially promising effects in animal physiology.

Sea Kelp.jpg

Kelp:intensely rich in minerals and trace elements,is highest in iron, calcium, potassium, magnesium, and offers substantial amounts of Vit. B's.

dulse.jpg

Dulse: is a good source of vegetable protein, iron, potassium, magnesium,
iodine, chlorophyll, enzymes, Vitamin A, Vitamin B's, and dietary fiber

laver.jpg

Laver: is the highest in Vitamins B1, B6, B12, C, and E, and contains
significant amounts of vegetable protein, fiber, Iron, and other minerals
and trace elements.

alaria.jpg

Alaria: is a good dietary source of Vitamin A, [beta carotene], iron,
potassium, magnesium, chlorophyll, enzymes, trace elements, Vitamin B's and
dietary fiber

Sea vegetables are rich in minerals and trace elements, including calcium,
magnesium, iron, potassium, iodine, manganese, chromium and more, at levels
much greater than those found in land vegetables. Sea veggies also provide
vitamins, fiber, enzymes, and high quality protein. Marine phytochemicals
found only in sea vegetables have been shown to absorb and eliminate
radioactive elements and heavy metal contaminants from our bodies. Other
recent research demonstrates the inhibition of tumor formation, reduction of
cholesterol, and anti-viral properties of sea vegetables.

Sea vegetables are wild ocean plants, or marine algae, enjoyed daily as
staple and healing foods in many coastal parts of the world. Small amounts
of sea veggies add a rich flavor and enhance the nutritional value of most
dishes. Popular American sea vegetables are Dulse, Kelp, Alaria, Laver, from
the east coast, and Sea Palm from the west coast. Asian varieties include
Nori, Hiziki, Arame, Kombu and Wakame.

Sea weed is yet another nutrient rich source for pet food supplementation.Nourishing Animals with Sea Vegetables
has been known to have included seaweed being fed to house pets.

seaweed 2.jpgseaweed.jpg

We are continually being asked why our Ocean Omega Fish Oil should be considered as a vital pet food supplement: here are some factoids for everyones consideration:

One of the most pressing issues in pet healthcare for the 21st century is nutrition, with obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disorders, and many other pet afflictions becoming more and more prominent, its all linked to their diets. In that aspect, omega-3 will play a major role. Since 1971 there are now some 14,000 published papers on omega-3, including close to 6,000 animal studies.

For three billion years Marine Phytoplankton has supported virtually all living creatures in the ocean. It contains a unique combination of life sustaining nutrients including; Omega 3 essential fatty acids (EPA and DHA), protein, chlorophyll, vitamins, minerals and trace elements.

Phytoplankton are the food source utilized by some of the world's largest and longest living animals and fish. Menhaden are gill raking fish that eat phytoplankton.

Menhaden is a natural food source for blue whales, humpbacks, baleen whales and more species of fish, that all eat plankton ,and they live between 80-150 years while maintaining great strength and endurance and are sexually active and able to reproduce until they die. The menhaden is the most important fish in the sea if you understand its ecological purpose.

In addition to providing high protein fish oil, the menhaden are also extremely rich in desirable long-chain Omega-3 fatty acids. It is no wonder that menhaden is an ingredient in many of the better dog foods. With concentrated, high quality protein for growth and vigorous maintenance, and rich in Omega-3 fatty acids for a healthy cardiovascular system, supple skin and glossy coat, menhaden earns it's reputation as a vital ocean food source.
That is why this fish from its natural sources is of superior quality when compared with fish from farms.

Because it lives solely on phytoplankton, the menhaden is a "clean" fish. And, because it is preyed upon by most everything in the sea, it has evolved into a strong and fast swimmer meaning good muscle mass, and therefore has concentrated protein. Our high quality and competitively priced Ocean Omega-3 Fish Oil which is not normally found in other pricier cold-water fishes can of course be perceived as an added bonus. We feel as though if we are able to perhaps provide these sea vegetables , in combination with our fish oil and glucosamine products, that this will serve to enhance optimum pet healthcare supplementation.

Cats and dogs need broad-based mineral support just as we do. They also benefit from chelated, colloidal minerals as opposed to the inorganic salts that leave a free metal ion in the digestive track. They may also be attracted to the highly utilizable protein in most sea veggies. And they probably need those minute quantities of trace minerals just as we do. Seaweed has been studied as a combatant in animal hemolytic anemia.

We once again ask for the assistance of readers of our blog ; to respond with personal experiences with such sea vegetable nutrients as it would apply to their own pets. We also would encourage inquiries as to interest level of seeing Ocean Omega perhaps adding these products to our breadth of holistic pet food supplementation.

Glucosamine is a substance that naturally occurs in healthy joints. As cats get older, their body seems to make less of it. It is the same thing with your body. This lower production of Glucosamine can lead to joint pain. When you give your cat Glucosamine to make up for the deficit, you are promoting healthy joints. And, of course, the nice thing about our Glucosamine is that it is from a vegetable source and not shellfish. The Apple Cider Vinegar contained within this product is a great digestive and immune system promoter as well.

Ocean Omega: 2008 New Years Resolutions For Your Pets

Happy New Year.gif Natural Nutritional Diets for Dogs and Cats

Consider A Natural Nutritional Diet for Dogs and Cats

As we enter the first day of the New Year 2008, the new day should bring consideration to what nutritional changes you will incorporate into your pets diet. When you reflect back on last years events with the tainted pet food debocle coming to a head, I would once again encourage pet owners to have their pets consume fewer processed foods and rely more on unadulterated natural ingredients in their meals.Of course I will self serve in that I would highly recommend our Ocean Omega Fish Oil as a key ingredient to be included in any raw food diet.Surely, our beloved animal companions are entitled to enjoy an optimal quality of life.

Why does the quality of pet food make a difference in your pet's health? Because food is body fuel and a quality life does not exist without it. The strength of your pet's immune system, its resistance to disease, and its quality of life all depend on the food that your pet eats. Most commercial pet food products are derived from the waste materials of our food industry. As I have alluded to in previous articles in this blog, many processed pet foods actually contain animal parts, which include diseased along with cancerous tissue and non-food items, euthanized pets including the euthanasia chemicals, preservatives, mold, fungi, and rancid fat. Most cooked products lack vital enzymes and they do not provide a healthy variety. The pet food industry to a large degree remains an unregulated entity without good quality control or stringent guidelines being enforced upon them. Read the product labels for ingredients and ponder if you would want to eat these products yourself. Would you provide them for your family, day after day, year after year, for their entire life? Common sense and ever increasing pet food product knowledge will continue to prove that our pets must eat a wide variety of fresh, wholesome foods to enjoy good health.

Until the last few years, most people have shared their own food with their dogs and cats. Common sense would dictate that it is no coincidence that our pets today are suffering from an epidemic of ill health with many of the same diseases as their human caretakers conducive to what is in their diets.

All species of animals have been shaped through many years of evolution to thrive in good health by eating specific foods. These food requirements vary with each species. To coincide with this evolution, the digestive make up of our domesticated dogs and cats is still identical to that of their wild relatives. The physiology of dogs and cats is that of being carnivores. Here's where a balanced diet should take place, do not feed an all meat diet. Carnivores such as our dogs and cats have evolved to derive their needed nutrients from eating other animals; including their preys bones, organs, and stomach contents, all raw. However, we should also consider the afore mentioned balance of ingredients to include other sources of vital nutrients

Contrasts in health between dogs and cats fed a cooked food diet and dogs and cats fed a raw food diet are readily apparent in their ultimate results. The dogs and cats on the raw food diet will thrive in good health, diminishing the need of veterinary care. Wild carnivores do not cook their food. Their entire physiology is designed to eat raw food. The closer we can simulate a natural wild diet, including a variety of species-appropriate raw foods, the closer we will be in providing nutrients in the form that our animal companions must have to enjoy good health. Making a well-designed homemade diet is the next best thing.

A few of the benefits of feeding a species-appropriate diet of raw foods as well as other nutrient natural food stuffs to your dog or cat include: stronger disease and parasite resistance, elimination of bad body odor and breath, healthy skin and coat, improved digestion, and the satisfaction of knowing exactly what your pet is eating. Switching our pets to a raw food diet should facilitate them enjoying the optimum quality of life that they deserve.

Fishmeal in Poultry Diets: Understanding what is and what isn't healthy in the valuable feed ingredient for poultry

Fishmeal in Poultry Diets: Menhaden Fish Meal

I presently have one client who has been utilizing our menhaden fish oil as an ingredient in her own"mash" concoction for feeding her hens to produce high quality and high content Omega Eggs. We are trying to entertain possibly bringing on a menhaden fish meal specifically geared towards poultry feed.High quality fishmeal is recognized as an excellent source of protein, energy, minerals and vitamins. The majority of this fishmeal produced is included in commercial diets for poultry, swine, dairy cattle, mink and fish.

Good quality fishmeal demands a higher price than other high protein feedstuffs. Its proper use, however, requires a knowledge of not only its nutrient profile but also WHAT NOT TO BE INCLUDED AS A PRESERVATIVE=Ethoxyquin. An understanding of fishmeal ingredients will give users a better understanding of how the various factors interact to influence the quality of fishmeal.

Why Menhaden Should Be The Species Of Choice?

Fish differ both in their ability to store oil as well as where in the body oil is stored.

Species of fish referred to as "lean fish" include such species as cod and haddock. In these species the oil is stored primarily in the liver. The flesh (fillets) contain very little oil. Fishmeal from this type of fish has a low oil content (2 to 6%) since the livers are removed before processing. The whole fish is not usually used since cod and haddock are prized for the fillets. Since the fillets are used for human consumption, the fishmeal from these lean fish are made principally from the offal (white fish frames) remaining after filleting. "White" fishmeal commonly contains a higher concentration of ash (minerals) since the bony frames (head and racks) of previously filleted cod, haddocks, etc. are used. White fishmeal constitutes only 10% of the world fishmeal production.

Menhaden fish used to manufacture fishmeal stores oil in certain parts of the flesh. These are high oil fish and, unlike the lean fish, are not prized for their fillets. They are commonly referred to as "industrial fish." Approximately 90% of the world fishmeal production is from this high oil species.

Menhaden fishmeal, as well as most other species of fish used for the production of fishmeal have a similar protein content that averages approximately 16% in the whole fish. This whole body protein content will vary by only plus or minus 2 to 3%. The fishmeal derived from the fish will, therefore, all be fairly similar in protein content. The oil (fat) content in the menhaden fish species is much more potent than other species content. The amount of oil in fishmeal is directly dependent on the efficiency of the oil removal at the time of processing.

Menhaden Fishmeal is Commonly Produced in the U.S.A.

In the U.S.A., the majority of the fishing industry is in the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. The main industrial fish harvested is menhaden. In fact, 98% of the fish oil produced in the U.S.A. is from menhaden, a high oil species. The oil is considered by fish processors to be a by-product of fishmeal production. This fish oil has an important place in animal diets.

Smaller quantities of fishmeal produced in the U.S.A. are made from herring, redfish, and white fish. These species of fishmeal are low in oil.

Why Menhaden Constitutes: Good Quality Fishmeal

Menhaden fish oil when correctly processed will produce a good quality brown powder which will average between 60% and 70% protein. The menhaden fish oil contained within the fishmeal will usually be in excess of 14%. The moisture level will commonly range from 6 to 12%. The ash content will range from 18% (more common for an industrial fishmeal) to 25% (more common for a white fish meal).

The odor of fishmeal, as would be expected, is that of fish. It is easily distinguished from other ingredients. If an acrid "scorched" smell is present this usually indicates overheating or scorching. If this occurs, a blackish dark-brown color is common and the quality of protein is usually affected in a negative manner.

I am working ardently to negotiate a feasible quantity and competitvely priced option for Ocean Omega to hopefully be able to provide this valuable poultry feed, as Ocean Omega continues to strive for more healthy pet products diversification within the confines of 2008. Stay tuned as more information will be forthcoming.

Human Food Stuffs To Avoid Giving Our Pets

Human Foods that Poison Pets

Feeding pets food that we enjoy is not only wrong, it can also be fatal. There are some foodstuffs that humans relish which cause illness and death if eaten by pets.

Chocolate, macadamia nuts and onions are good examples. Each of these foods contains chemicals which rarely cause problems for humans, but for dogs, these same chemicals can be deadly.

Chocolate contains theobromine, a compound that is a cardiac stimulant and a diuretic.
When affected by an overdose of chocolate, a dog can become excited and hyperactive. Due to the diuretic effect, it may pass large volumes of urine and it will be unusually thirsty. Vomiting and diarrhea are also common. The effect of theobromine on the heart is the most dangerous effect. Theobromine will either increase the dog’s heart rate or may cause the heart to beat irregularly. Death is quite possible, especially with exercise.
After their pet has eaten a large quantity of chocolate, many pet owners assume their pet is unaffected. However, the signs of sickness may not be seen for several hours, with death following within twenty-four hours.

Cocoa powder and cooking chocolate are the most toxic forms. A 10-kilogram dog can be seriously affected if it eats a quarter of a 250gm packet of cocoa powder or half of a 250gm block of cooking chocolate. These forms of chocolate contain ten times more theobromine than milk chocolate. Thus, a chocolate mud cake could be a real health risk for a small dog. Even licking a substantial part of the chocolate icing from a cake can make a dog unwell.
Semi-sweet chocolate and dark chocolate are the next most dangerous forms, with milk chocolate being the least dangerous. A dog needs to eat more than a 250gm block of milk chocolate to be affected. Obviously, the smaller the dog, the less it needs to eat

Onions and garlic are other dangerous food ingredients that cause sickness in dogs, cats and also livestock. Onions and garlic contain the toxic ingredient thiosulphate. Onions are more of a danger.

Pets affected by onion toxicity will develop hemolytic anemia, where the pet’s red blood cells burst while circulating in its body.

At first, pets affected by onion poisoning show gastroenteritis with vomiting and diarrhea. They will show no interest in food and will be dull and weak. The red pigment from the burst blood cells appears in an affected animal’s urine and it becomes breathless. The breathlessness occurs because the red blood cells that carry oxygen through the body are reduced in number.

The poisoning occurs a few days after the pet has eaten the onion. All forms of onion can be a problem including dehydrated onions, raw onions, cooked onions and table scraps containing cooked onions and/or garlic. Left over pizza, Chinese dishes and commercial baby food containing onion, sometimes fed as a supplement to young pets, can cause illness.
Onion poisoning can occur with a single ingestion of large quantities or with repeated meals containing small amounts of onion. A single meal of 600 to 800 grams of raw onion can be dangerous whereas a ten-kilogram dog, fed 150 grams of onion for several days, is also likely to develop anemia. The condition improves once the dog is prevented from eating any further onion
While garlic also contains the toxic ingredient thiosulphate, it seems that garlic is less toxic and large amounts would need to be eaten to cause illness.

Macadamia nuts are another concern. The toxic compound is unknown but the affect of macadamia nuts is to cause locomotory difficulties. Dogs develop a tremor of the skeletal muscles, and weakness or paralysis of the hindquarters. Affected dogs are often unable to rise and are distressed, usually panting. Some affected dogs have swollen limbs and show pain when the limbs are manipulated.

Dogs have been affected by eating as few as six macadamia kernels (nuts without the shell) , also avoid macadamia butter.

Luckily, the muscle weakness, while painful, seems to be of short duration and all dogs can recover from the toxicity. All dogs should be taken to their veterinary surgeon.

Pets owners should not assume that human food is always safe for pets. When it comes to chocolate, onions, garlic and macadamia nuts, such foods should be avoided. Be sure that your pets can’t get into your stash of chocolates, that food scraps are disposed of carefully to prevent onion and garlic toxicity and that your dog is prevented from picking up macadamia nuts if you have a tree in your garden.

This lower production of Glucosamine can lead to joint pain. When you give your dog Glucosamine to make up for the deficit, you are promoting healthy joints. Because a dogs body is familiar with Glucosamine, it is easily absorbed. It also contains vital nutrients that joints can use to stay healthy. Cartilage is the cushioning between the bones that act as
a shock absorber, and is a building block of healthy cartilage
is glucosamine. Just like you, your dog’s body naturally
produces glucosamine. As your pet ages its body gradually
produces less glucosamine and the cartilage between the
joint can deteriorate, leaving your dog in pain. When you
give your pet glucosamine you are replacing this deficit and
    promoting healthy joints.

ENP is the first to use REGENASURE Glucosamine in
its formula. REGENASURE is derived from a non-shellfish
source, eliminating allergies that can come from using traditional
    shellfish glucosamine.
Fluid is also needed to lubricate the joint and allow it to
move freely. Chondroitin and Manganese act by drawing
fluid in around the joints and help to keep it there.

Tendons and Ligaments are the components most joint

How Many Omega 3's Are There Per Teaspoon of Ocean Omega Fish Oil

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at PhotobucketPhoto Sharing and Video Hosting at PhotobucketPhoto Sharing and Video Hosting at PhotobucketPhoto Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

One of the most commonly asked questions at our OO website is: How many Omega 3's of EPA and DHA are there per "Teaspoon" of your fish oil? We could go into some elaborate weighings of teaspoons, but, that would be somewhat meaningless, since different people might fill a"teaspoon" to different levels.

Even different teaspoons from different, or the same, manufacturers would hold different amounts. A teaspoon out of the kitchen drawer is not designed to be used as a precision measuring device. The answer is somewhat scientific in its composition.

Because the fish oil is derived from a living source, you have to recognize the fact that different batches of oil will have slightly differing specific gravities.

Since the fatty acid composition will vary with what the fish consumed,
the EPA and DHA will vary from batch to batch.

Best Calculations would be as follows:
    one standard teaspoon has a
    nominal volume of 5 ml.

OO Plus and OO Gold fish oil both have a specific gravity of 0.9293,
Rounded up to make it 0.93.

Therefore, a teaspoon will hold approximately 4.65 grams, or 4650
    milligrams.

Both OO-G and OO-P have an EPA range listed at 11-15, with a typical
average of 14.16%. My latest data has the EPA at
12.73 based on an annual production composite sample. Utilizing a
    value of 13% .

OO-G and OO-P have a DHA range listed at 9-13 and 11-15, respectively.
Both have mean values of 10.26%. Again, based on the annual production
composite samples, the latest data has the values at 12.31%.
Utilizing 12%, the theorem would extend out as follows:

    EPA: 1 tsp = 4650 mg (with 13% EPA) = 604.5 mg EPA.
(I'd round that to 600 mg)

    DHA: 1 tsp = 4650 mg (with 12% DHA) = 558.0 mg DHA.
(I'd round that to 550 mg)

    Conclusion:
per " tsp" of OO Fish Oil there are 600 mg of EPA and 550 mg of DHA

The Majestic Argentine Dogo Friends of Ocean Omega

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at PhotobucketPhoto Sharing and Video Hosting at PhotobucketPhoto Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

One of the most Majestic Breeds of Dog within our circle of Ocean Omega friends and clients , is the Dogo.
I have had the privilege and honor of knowing the breed and providing our Ocean Omega fish oil to the proprietor and "ALFA" of Howling Acres Argentine Dogos. Here is more about this facinating breed submitted by Barbara.

    El Dogo Argentino:by Barbara Sanders

I own and operate Howling Acres a small hobby kennel in the mountains of
Virginia. I have been involved with the Dogo Argentino race of dog for
about 20 years. I have spent much of that time working on ancestry of
the breed and the variations in different lines that have developed since
the breed originated. I have spent all of that time exclusively dedicated to
the preservation of what I have found to be a most incredible creature. A
dog created in Argentina in one lifetime by two brothers who had a dream and followed their path.

I have shown my dogs and captured many Championships with one of the
most outstanding dogs of all time. I have trained in agility, obedience and
search and rescue and have found that the limitations of this race of dog
just do not exist. I have studied dog behavior and I have found that all
I have learned is not in the many books I have read but in the dog itself.
I am well taught by a species that does not speak in my language, but in
the universal language of nature, it is loud and clear.

This is a created breed comprised of 10 breeds that were blended
together to make the ultimate hunting dog. A designer dog so to speak. It seems that the best qualities of the 10 breeds emerged and blossomed into one of the finest and most intelligent dogs ever. While this dog is the ultimate
hunter, much like a Cheetah, it is also a great athlete, a loyal companion,
a family protector, beautiful to behold.

When one deals with a dog of pure intelligence it takes time to learn to
listen. It is a human trait to want to talk but the key to understanding
is in listening. A dog will never take it eyes off you. It is summing you
up by watching your body language. This is the key to making contact with
a canine and creating a medium of mutual understanding. Every move of
human and dog has meaning. Dogs are not mind readers and so know when we are feeling sad. We carry ourselves in a different manner when that or any
condition exists and the dogs perceive the difference and relate it to
    our other behaviors. Body language.

Dogs are migratory animals in that each day is a new day. Dogs live in
the moment and, while they do have memories they use as tools to
differentiate between conditions, they do not live in the past nor the future. They
feel no guilt, a human trait. They are not jealous, human trait. They do not
miss you when you leave for a time, they have no concept of time. They sleep
until you return. While they appear to be happy to see us all things
being equal they relax as their world has order.

We do not "train" our dogs but if we are diligent we communicate our
desires and the do responds. Dogs have many behaviors that may at times seem strange to us but there is a reason for everything they do. It is up to
us to understand and work within that parameter. Dogs are not vicious,
mean or violent. Again human traits that we place on our dogs. It is not our
duty to change a dog but to work with the qualities that a particular dog has
    and find common ground.

People are inquiring why Ocean Omega Menhaden Fish Oil when considering pet food supplementation?

    MRSA and Pets

I recently received an inquiry at our OO website from a lady stating that her vet intimated that our OO fish oil would conflict with Baytril, which was prescribed by the inquirers vet to treat MRSA/Mersa.
What I first said to myself when receiving this inquiry is not g rated. What I replied to the inquirer is the following:

We as pet owners need to be concerned with animals contracting MRSA. It is a very worrying situation. More research needs to be done for the future. Concerns about MRSA cross contamination from people to animals, should have vets being diligent about infection control, and what they are prescribing. As for your vet and the value of fish oil enhancing the immune system of pets, he or she simply needs to do more research (turns out the vet had a Large Pharma supplier of fish oil on the vet office shelf--hmmm).

If vets are "scratching" (bad pun here) their collective heads and now blaming the pets, because their respective favorite pharmas can't come up with anything either, then we should all be concerned with protecting pets from unnecessary suffering and death.

For years dog health supplies have included toxic materials to artificially maintain dog health as a temporary measure. The time has come to change to a more natural approach toward animal health. Natural remedies have been shown to achieve more immediate, more complete and longer lasting health, vitality, quality and longevity of animal lives.

I have heard, but cannot vouch for the validity, that Manuka Honey is a very potent natural product which can kill MRSA?

    Ocean Omega New Product Glucosamine

We are rapidly working on placing our new OO Glucosamine for Dogs on ourVisit Us Now! Ocean Omega Website :stay tuned for updates.

Glucosamine for dogs helps prevent joint damage, rebuild worn joint tissue,
and slow further degeneration. Makes an excellent long-term maintenance
program for active dogs, working dogs, and older dogs. Cats, too!

Glucosamine is found naturally in the body, where it is a key nutrient for
synthesizing the molecules that give shape, elasticity, and rigidity to such
tissues as cartilage, tendons, ligaments, discs, and mucous membranes.
Glucosamine also forms glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) in the synovial fluid which
gives joint fluid greater elasticity, shock resistance, and lubrication. It
helps restore the thick, gelatinous nature of the lubricants and tissues in
and around joints. The body requires large amounts of Glucosamine to
maintain and repair joint fluid and connective tissues. Glucosamine is also
the necessary precursor to the production of Chondroitin Sulfates and other
glycosaminoglycans that play a number of important roles in the body. A
chronic shortage of Glucosamine can lead to deterioration of synovial fluid,
damage and loss of elasticity to connective tissues, muscles, discs, and
    joints.

Glucosamine helps provide these joint "protectants" to your pet when his
body is no longer creating enough on its own, during times of excess stress
and wear, or after injury. It has been found to he one of the key nutrients
for the support and repair processes of injured or stressed joints in both
cats and dogs. Glucosamine has been used successfully both for
intermediate rebuilding therapy and as long-term preventative maintenance.

Be Careful of Anti-Freeze Around Your Pets

Antifreeze poses serious danger for household pets
As we Mainers are preparing for the winter season by checking furnaces and adding antifreeze to vehicles, pet owners also need to take precautions for their furry friends.

Proper pet care goes beyond providing the animal with food and shelter. Pet owners must be aware that antifreeze is poisonous to animals.

Antifreeze poisoning kills many dogs and cats every year. With the weather starting to cool down, many Mainers are changing the antifreeze in their cars and they must be careful in order to prevent spills that can be found by pets. Even a small amount of antifreeze can be fatal. Unfortunately, antifreeze is sweet so it´s appealing to pets.

It takes just a small amount of antifreeze to be fatal. In small animals, 60 percent to 70 percent of dogs die due to ingesting antifreeze. The percentages are higher in cats. It takes a mere 3 to 5 tablespoons of antifreeze to be fatal in medium sized dogs and only about a teaspoon for cats. In fact, if a cat simply walks through spilled antifreeze and licks its paws, that small amount can be enough to poison the animal.

Signs of antifreeze poisoning can show up within 30 minutes to several hours after ingestion. Signs include vomiting, staggering and depression. In some cases the animal may appear to recover only to return to more sever symptoms in about 12 to 36 hours.

By the time the animal has metabolized the ethylene glycol into toxic compounds, severe renal damage has occurred.

Subsequently, these animals often seizure, develop respiratory distress, exhibit repetitive vomiting, have abdominal pain and can lapse into a coma. The kidneys will eventually stop functioning which will lead to the animal´s death.

If caught early, antifreeze poisoning is treatable. The pet should be immediately taken to the veterinarian in order to minimize the amount of ethylene glycol that is absorbed from the gastro-intestinal tract.

The veterinarian may induce vomiting and give the animal activated charcoal to help prevent further absorption.

Your pet also may be given a medication to slow down the activity of the enzyme responsible for metabolizing ethylene glycol into toxic compounds.

In addition, the pet would be given basic supportive care such as intravenous fluids to help preserve normal kidney function. If treated properly and quickly, within three hours for cats and eight hours for dogs, the prognosis is positive for survival.

The key to avoiding accidental poisonings is prevention. Pet owners should maintain their vehicle´s coolant system to prevent leaks. Should antifreeze get spilled, it must be cleaned up immediately. Store antifreeze high on a shelf to keep it out of the reach of children and pets. Used antifreeze should be taken to a facility that recycles or handles hazardous waste.

If you think your pet has consumed antifreeze, take it to your veterinarian immediately. Remember, quick treatment can help save your pet´s life.

Ocean Omega Fish Oil Helping Pets with Skin Issues

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at PhotobucketItchy Dog or Cat? It Could Be Food Allergy Dermatitis Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Food allergy dermatitis, more precisely known as cutaneous adverse food reaction, is a chronic skin disease that affects both dogs and cats.

Reaction to certain foods is the third most common allergy in dogs, after flea allergy dermatitis and atopic dermatitis (hypersensitivity reactions to mold, pollen, dust, mites or other allergens in the environment).

Companion animals can suffer from dermatitis due to flea, atopic or food allergies alone, or in combination, such as flea and environmental allergies—sometimes all three.

Dogs and cats with food allergy dermatitis, if continuously fed the same diet, do not have seasonal variation—they are usually itchy year round. Occasionally, dogs may have gastrointestinal signs as well, including diarrhea, vomiting or flatulence.

While flea allergy dermatitis is also the most common allergy in cats. There seems to be more cases with food as the sole allergy in cats than in dogs. When the food allergy dermatitis is recognized, cats may have extremely itchy skin, especially around the head, face and neck area.”

Since cat owners expect to see grooming behavior in their pets, it can be difficult to recognize mild itchiness versus normal grooming behavior.

Many mildly affected cats with allergies may never be brought to the dermatologist. Dogs are not grooming animals, so any increased licking is usually interpreted by owners as a problem.

Dogs with cutaneous adverse food reactions may itch anywhere, especially the face, ears and feet. That is also true for pollen and mold allergy—the signs can look exactly the same.

Both dogs and cats may scratch and chew affected areas until they inflict skin damage, and they may have recurrent skin or ear infections. The veterinary dermatologist must evaluate the animal and determine the nature of the allergy.

The onset of food allergy signs can appear suddenly, at any age, and continue as long as the offending food continues to be eaten. It might be assumed that a food allergy has resulted from a recent change in diet, yet it has been shown that dogs may regularly eat a food for at least two years before visible signs of an adverse reaction.

Also, rather than being caused by some exotic ingredient, reactions are generally elicited by common food ingredients—and those eaten most often by the animal.

Animals usually react to a protein source such as chicken, beef, soy or egg, but they can also react to a carbohydrate or preservative. Other possible dietary allergens include dairy products, poultry, lamb, wheat, corn and rice. Dogs and cats may react differently to ingredients in their food in different geographic locations because of variability in available proteins, manufacturing techniques or additives.

Food allergy dermatitis is diagnosed by means of an elimination diet. The animal is prescribed a homemade or commercial diet that contains a single protein and a single carbohydrate to which he or she has never been exposed, while all the other food elements are completely eliminated.

If the animal´s diet is variable, especially for cats that live outdoors and have access to mice, birds or other food, it may be more of a challenge to select ingredients for the elimination diet trial that are not likely to have been consumed previously.

Any elimination diet must be adhered to strictly in order to diagnose the presence or absence of a cutaneous adverse food reaction in the animal. The animal must not be allowed to have treats such as raw hide chews, pig´s ear treats, other chew toys of animal origin or flavored medications and vitamin products—only the prescribed diet and water.

Once the offending food item is removed from the pet´s diet, it may take weeks until the animal has relief from the clinical signs. The testing period usually lasts 8–10 weeks.

If the signs improve, and food allergy is suspected as a result of the elimination diet, a “diet re-challenge” is then performed. The animal is returned to the original diet plus treats. If that animal is food allergic, the clinical signs should worsen within hours or days, confirming food allergy.

But that doesn´t mean that the animal doesn´t also have flea or environmental allergies.

It is not yet known why some animals develop allergies to foods. Theories involve individual variability in absorption of protein breakdown products during digestion, or that in the gut of an allergic patient larger molecular weight proteins trigger allergic reactions or intolerance when they are detected by the immune system.

That is why commercial hydrolyzed diets are sometimes prescribed to help diagnose food allergy. In hydrolyzed diets, common protein ingredients are altered to have a molecular weight below the presumed allergic threshold.

The good news is that if the pet is food allergic, veterinarian and client can then work together to discover
exactly which foods are the culprits and eliminate those foods from the animal´s life.

    Food Allergy

Food “allergy” or “hypersensitivity” results from an immunological (antibody-mediated) reaction to certain glycoprotein molecules generated during digestion. Immunological reactions likely involve genetic predisposition.
Food “intolerance” is a negative physiological response that can be induced by proteins, food additives, toxins or bacterial contamination.

Even if cutaneous adverse food reaction is caused by a true allergy, there are no reliable skin or blood tests currently available to make the distinction. In the case of either allergy or intolerance, an elimination diet is used to determine that an animal is reactive to certain foods.

The Essentials of a Dog's Healthy Coat
What a dog looks like on the outside is likely an indication of what is going on in the inside.

If a dog's coat is matted, dull or has an unkempt appearance, chances are that the animal needs more essential fatty acids (EFAs) in its diet.

EFAs such as omega-3 fatty acids and omega-6 fatty acids play a critical role in the health of a dog's skin and coat and also contribute to the animal's overall good health.

Pet foods are SUPPOSEDLY manufactured to maintain the health of healthy pets and already contain adequate essential fatty acids, but some pets may need more EFAs in their diet

The best example is how a dog with dry, maybe scaly skin would benefit from having some additional oil containing EFAs added to its diet. Pet owners should utilize an appropriate amount of Ocean Omega Fish Oil to be added to the diet.

The body cannot make essential fatty acids, so they must be added through diet. Dogs with skin and coat problems should be fed pet food mixed with higher amounts of Ocean Omega Fish Oil and improvements should be noticed in about 28 days. The most noticeable improvements will be seen at about seven weeks.

At seven weeks, you should look at the dog and see how his coat has improved.

Ocean Omegas' Client Suggested "Wild Diet"

In a recent entry of this Ocean Omega Notes Blog I have mentioned the start of an informative pet healthcare message board that I am a co author of with one of my nearest and dearest friends and OO clients, Barbara Sanders of Howling Acres. I have received many inquiries at our OO website, both from existing customers and visitors searching our website for advice on creating their own pet food diets in lieu of last SPRINGS PET FOOD CONTAMINATION RECALL DEBOCLE. I have included a direct quote from Barbara, posted earlier today on our afore mentioned Animal Partners Message Board

Here is Barbaras Direct Quotation regarding the diet:

    Ok here goes Wild Diet
Organic beef, venison, chicken, bison, rabbit or goat or any like meat that is available in your location. Organ meats should be added whenever possible, liver and such. Pork must be added to venison as there is no fat in venison. There are no hormones in the meats I feed as everything I can get my hands on is free range or I do not eat it or feed it. It does take some doing. We are lucky here getting more local farmers and its not cheap but in the long run I do not have vet bills. If you sweet talk your local hunt clubs you can get venison that they do not use. They usually keep only the choice cuts.

I grind the meats (I have a heavy duty grinder) and add, sweet potatoes (never white) carrots, and any veggies available,(none of the nightshade family) brewers yeast, flaxseed meal, garlic, cider vinegar,no salt, Omega 3 fish oil, eggs (shells and all or you can grind the shells to a powder and add that) organic brown rice,(white rice has no nutritional value) string beans, squash,(you can use frozen out of season) and cut up apples. Do not grind apples or they will make a mush that plugs your grinder. This is kind of a melange of stuff but its a bit like what wild wolves eat when they make a kill. The first thing they do is eat the organs and then the stomach contents. Then they let the meat ferment a few days and come back to the kill and eat the meat and then the bones. To this diet I add raw meaty bones a couple of times a week. I also make my own yogurt( I don't think wolves get that)(recipe if you want it) and they get that for breakfast twice a week along with more eggs (I have my own chickens). Its kind of a common sense diet keeping them healthy and happy. I also feed fish at least once a week and fish oil every day.
This is a raw diet, nothing cooked. It takes some doing as I have nine 100lb dogos with hearty appetites. I have a dog freezer in the kennel. They have music but are not allowed to watch tv, too much violence.

Keep in mind wild animals do not eat every day so you can fast your dogs every few days if you like. Sometimes I do.

You will get controversial comments about omnivores and carnivores. I will not debate that.

This is what works for me. I do supplement with some dry food as a base because I cannot always have enough food on hand to keep up. I use Blackwood 5000 which is a catfish based food. I have to cheat sometimes.

I also use diatomaceous earth three days a month for fleas, ticks, heartworm and general parasites. I do not use any toxic poisons or chemicals on my dogs.

    I DRIVE MY VETS NUTS!!!!!

Animal Carcasses In our Pets Foods

I recently received an e mail from The Humane Society of the United States, regarding an article as to how they recently worked with local police and animal groups to rescue nearly 100 dogs bound for the dog meat trade. Please see this link for more details:

    https://community.hsus.org/humane/notice-description.tcl?newsletter_id=14752362

This precipitated me to once again author a blog regarding What is in our pet commercially produced pet foods, INCLUDING DEAD CARCASSES OF ANIMALS!.

Meat By-products: Pet grade meat by-products consist of organs and parts not desired or not fit for human consumption. This can include organs, bones, blood and fatty tissue. It can also include brains, feet, heads, intestines and any other internal parts. Unbelievably, by-products can also contain cancerous or diseased tissue containing parasites.

The pet food industry is an 11 billion dollar a year, unregulated operation
that feeds on the garbage that otherwise would and should end up in a
landfill. Pet food manufacturers have become masters at getting pets to eat
things they would normally turn their nose up at.

Pet food scientists have learned that it's possible to take a mixture of
inedible garbage, fortify it with artificial vitamins and minerals, preserve
it so it can sit on the grocery shelf for more than a year, add dyes to make
it attractive and then extrude it into whimsical shapes, making it appealing
to us humans so we will purchase it. Unfortunately what makes up most of dog
and cat food today comes from the rendering plant. To render, as defined in
Webster's Dictionary, is "to process as for industrial use; to render
livestock carcasses and to extract oil from fat, blubber, etc., by melting."
Some things that go into rendering are:

    * Spoiled rotten meat from the supermarket, styrofoam wrap and all.

    * Road kill that can't be buried on the roadside.

    * The "4-D's" of cattle; dead, dying, diseased and disabled

    * Rancid restaurant grease

    * Euthanized pets, this is NO joke!

When chickens, lambs, cattle, pigs and other animals are slaughtered for
food, usually only the lean muscle is cut off for human consumption. This
leaves about 50% of a carcass left over. These leftovers are what become
what we so commonly find on pet food labels such as "meat and bone meal" or
"by-products". So basically what pets are eating are lungs, ligaments,
    bones, blood and intestines.

When dead animals from pastures are picked up, they many not be rendered for
up to a week after they have died. Because of this it is estimated that E.
coli bacteria contaminates more than 50% of meat materials. The rendering
process destroys the E. coli bacteria, but it does not eliminate the
endotoxins bacteria that is released when they die. These endotoxins, which
can cause sickness and disease, are not tested for by pet food
    manufacturers.

Slaughterhouses where cattle, pigs, lambs and other animals meet their fate
provide more fuel for rendering. After slaughter, heads, feet, skin, hair,
feathers, carpel and tarsal joints and mammary (milking) glands are removed.
This material is sent to rendering. Animals that have died on their way to
slaughter are also rendered. Cancerous tissue, tumors and worm infested
organs are rendered. Injection sites, blood clots and any other inessential
parts are rendered. Stomach and bowels are rendered. Contaminated material
including blood is rendered. Carcasses with high levels of drugs or
pesticides in excess of limits prescribed under the FDA (not fit for human
    consumption) are rendered.

At the rendering plant, slaughterhouse material, supermarket refuse, rancid
restaurant grease, dead livestock, road kill and euthanized pets are dumped
into huge containers. A machine slowly grinds the entire mess. After it is
chipped or shredded, it is cooked at 220 - 270 degrees F. for approximately
20 minutes to one hour. The grease or tallow rises to the top where it is
removed from the mixture. This is the source of animal fat in most pet foods
on the market today. The remaining material, the raw, is then put into a
press where the moisture is squeezed out, we now have the meat and bone meal
that is added to most pet foods today.

Animals wouldn't normally eat this stuff in the wild, so why will they eat
it out of their bowls? Their noses are tricked by the smell of it. Pet food
manufacturers are masters at getting a pet to eat something they would
normally turn their nose up at.

These flavors usually come from rancid restaurant grease, you know from
those big dumpsters you see in the back parking lot. This grease is often
outside for weeks, exposed to extreme temperatures with no regard for its
future use. The rancid grease is then picked up by fat blenders who mix the
animal and vegetable fats together, stabilize them with powerful
antioxidants to prevent further spoilage, then they sell it to pet food
manufacturers. Rancid, heavily preserved fats are extremely difficult to for
animals to digest and can lead to a host of pet health problems including
digestive upsets, diarrhea, gas and bad breath. These fats are sprayed
directly onto the kibble or nuggets to make an otherwise distasteful product
    palatable.

Two thirds of the pet food manufactured today contain synthetic
preservatives, of the remaining one third, 90% includes ingredients already
stabilized by synthetic preservatives. Be wary of pet foods that advertise
as preservative free, if they using animal by-products or ingredients that
have been rendered they will mostly like contain preservatives. Natural
preservatives such as Rosemary and Vitamin E are used by quality
manufacturers of natural pet foods not containing artificial/chemical
preservatives. However, Pet food manufacturers are not required to list
preservatives they themselves have not added. Here are some of the chemical
preservatives that are used in mass-produced pet food today:

    * BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole) - known to cause kidney and liver
    dysfunction

    * BHT (butylated hydroxytolulene) - known to cause kidney and liver
    dysfunction

    * Ethoxyquin - suspected of causing cancer

    * Propylene glycol (also used as automotive antifreeze) causes destruction
of red blood cells-and is also commonly found in many treats such as
    Pedigree Dentabone/DentaStix etc

    Hip Dysplasia In Dogs

We recently received a very nice customer testimonial that stated Ocean Omega Fish Oil has helped their animal with hip dysplasia by strengthening loose joints and supporting growth and maintenance of connective tissue : heres her direct quote:

"I met you last month at Woofstock in Damariscotta, ME. I wanted to give you a testimonial about how well your product has worked for my 8 year old
Sheltie Sadie. Sadie has had hip dysplasia since she was born. I have treated her with glucosamine and condroitin since she was 12 weeks old. This winter
when we were having a particularly cold snap her hind end gave out while she was trying to go to the bathroom. We were both upset very much by this,
and I had to carry her into the house where it was warm before she could walk normally again. This happened several times. I mentioned the problem to
Aubrey at The Animal House and she suggested trialing your product. I was concerned that Sadie would not like the flavor, but she has shown no sign of
disliking it. I was also concerned that the oil would give her loose bowels, but that has not happened. Since using your product she has not had any
episodes of falling down. Sadie also has very dry skin and skin allergies. I notice that her coat is more shiny since starting on your product. Sadie also
has more energy and runs around more. I would highly recommend your product to anyone who has a dog with hip dysplagia. Thank you for a great
    product. " Beckie D.

    Who suffers from Hip Dysplasia?

Broadly speaking, hip dysplasia (a malformed hip socket) strikes generally in larger breeds of dogs although not exclusively with them. This excessive movement in the affected joint caused calcium deposits, chronic inflammation problems and this all adds to greater degeneration in the joint. It is interesting to note that this condition is not present at birth; it develops in the puppy stage.

There is also some controversy about what causes hip dysplasia. Some say it is genetic but this is not conclusive. In fact, a closer reading of the literature reveals some other factors.

The issue with larger breed dogs is weight. And of course, the more they weigh the greater the problem is.

Our regular OO Notes blog readers know that I am a very strong advocate for using menhaden fish oil in dealing with hip dysplasia and other arthritis related conditions in family pets. The success reported by pet owners seems to bear the conclusion that it is a highly successful avenue to follow.

The reason for using a liquid formula menhaden fish oil is because it is much more highly absorbed than a pill or capsule form. In fact, clinical studies reveal that only about 800-850 mg. a day is required to be highly effective.

In reviewing the clinical studies, it is interesting to note that researchers have also implicated a Vitamin C deficiency in the development of hip dysplasia (chronic sub clinical scurvy.) If that is the case, then the theory would be that the hip forms poorly because of a weakness in the ligaments and muscles that surround the joint. For that reason, Ocean Omega Fish Oil liquid combined with a Vitamin C supplement, should provide optimum results

    Prevention

Since hip dysplasia begins in early puppyhood, this is also an indication that you should not wait until you see signs of arthritis in your dog before using Ocean Omega Menhaden Fish Oil. Using doses appropriate to their body weight would be a good way to help the cartilage in your pet's joints now.

    Diet

Pets that are fed as much natural food as possible stand a better chance against developing arthritis, as well as when they are coping with it. The more natural the food you feed your pet, the better off they will be in the long run.

    What’s right?

I don’t think there is any “perfect” solution as to what a more natural diet should be for your pet. I do recommend that if you are using commercially manufactured foods, that you use caution as to what you buy.

    Introducing Horses to Fish Oil

One of the common inquiries I receive at our website, is from horse owners asking about flavored fish oil for equines. They often ask how do I get my horse to accept the flavorings of your fish oil?

A very helpful suggestion that I received from one of our clients is:a little Vicks salve in the horse's
nose would make it to where the horse would eat the fish oil. The Vicks
salve makes it so the horse cannot smell or taste the fish oil. This suggestion came from someone who has been caring for horses for over 60 years.

I am consistently asking and looking for readers of this blog to please submit comments. Should any of you know of additional "tricks'" of the trade for introducing horses to fish oil flavorings, please do share them with us.

If anybody has tried the Vicks Salve, please do let me know that as well.

Think About What Second Hand Smoke Does To Pets

I often get inquiries at our website about how our fish oil is beneficial for pets with cancer. Some of these folks making these inquiries also state that they are at a loss as to what might accelerate the on set of cancer in their pets. I have disscussed the diet of their pets , but another significant contributor can be second hand smoke for those pets living in a "smoking household".

Secondhand smoke is a health threat to pets as well as humans.
It has been in the news for years about how secondhand smoke is a health threat to nonsmokers. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that secondhand smoke is attributed with killing thousands of adult nonsmokers annually.

If smoking is that harmful to human beings, it would make sense that secondhand smoke would have an adverse effect on pets that live in the homes of smokers.
There have been a number of scientific papers recently that have reported the significant health threat secondhand smoke poses to pets. Secondhand smoke has been associated with oral cancer and lymphoma in cats, lung and nasal cancer in dogs, as well as lung cancer in birds.

A study conducted recently at Tuft College of Veterinary Medicine found a strong correlation between secondhand smoke and certain forms of cancer in cats. The number of cats with mouth cancer, also known as squamous cell carcinoma, was higher for those animals living in smoking environments versus those felines living in a smoke-free home. In addition, cats that lived with smokers for five or more years had an even higher incidence of this type of oral cancer.

One reason cats are so susceptible to secondhand smoke is because of their grooming habits. Cats constantly lick themselves while grooming, therefore they lick up the cancer-causing carcinogens that accumulate on their fur. This grooming behavior exposes the mucous membrane of their mouth to the cancer-causing carcinogens.

Malignant lymphoma is another type of cancer that cats that live with smokers have a higher risk of getting. This cancer occurs in the lymph nodes and cats are twice as likely to have this type of cancer compared to cats living in a non-smoking home. This form of cancer is fatal to three out of four cats within 12 months of developing the cancer.

Secondhand smoke is greatly associated with the increased occurrence of cancer in the nose and sinus area among dogs. Research also indicates a slight association with lung cancer.

A recent study conducted at Colorado State University shows that there is a higher incidence of nasal tumors in dogs living in a home with secondhand smoke compared to dogs living in a smoke free environment,The increased incidence was specifically found among the long nosed breed of dogs. Shorter or medium nosed dogs showed higher rates for lung cancer.

The longer nosed breeds of dogs have a great surface area in their noses that is exposed to the carcinogens. This also provides more area in which the carcinogens can accumulate. The carcinogens tend to build up on the mucous membranes of long nosed dogs so not as much reaches the lungs.

Unfortunately, dogs affected with nasal cancer normally do not survive more than one year.

The reason short and medium nose dogs have a higher occurrence of lung cancer is because their shorter nasal passages aren´t as effective at accumulating the inhaled secondhand smoke carcinogens. This results in more carcinogens reaching the lungs.

Pet birds also are victims of secondhand smoke. A bird´s respiratory system is hypersensitive to any type of pollutant in the air.

The most serious consequences of secondhand smoke exposure in birds are pneumonia or lung cancer. Other health risks include eye, skin, heart and fertility problems.

Secondhand smoke is not the only danger faced by pets that live in smoke filled environments. Poisoning is another risk they face.

Curious pets can eat cigarettes and other tobacco products if the products aren´t stored properly, When ingested, this can cause nicotine poisoning, which can be fatal.

It is important, both for the health of pets and others living in the household, that the smoker has a designated area in which to smoke that is physically separated from the home. In addition, always keep cigarettes, cigarette butts and other tobacco products put away.

A better choice that could enhance your chances of enjoying a healthier lifestyle with your family and pets would be to stop smoking altogether.

    The Nine Lives of Cats

Well My wife and I have just returned from a huge consultation with our vet. It would appear that my cat Harry, who is suffering from diabetes induced renal failure, STILL has several potential quality months left.

After his readings for kidney failure were so poor last week ( 75% kidneys are gone), we decided to consider hydrating Harry intraveinously. The vet administered the first bag of hydration fluids today in her office. We also have Harry on food dedicated to kidney health, and she said to most definitely keep giving Harry our OO fish oil.She is confident this fish oil is serving his immune system quite nicely to fight his battle with renal failure.

This past week has been so tumultuous, as the beginning of the week looked pretty bleek. Then as the week progressed Harry seemed more perky, and he came upstairs last night to sleep with us on the bed (his normal routine), that he had abandoned for the previous last ten days or so? He also demanded that his head be rubbed in the middle of the night, again another normal routine.

Then at his breakfast time this morning, he raced to his dish for food, wrestling with his brother along the way, it was like he has revisited his youth. So we had tried to prepare ourselves all week long for his very possible euthanization today, but in lieu of his apparent turn around, we decided to give the hydration process a whirl.

The vet seemed to say, without having a crystal ball, that he may respond well and still have several months left. Again the reality of it is ; he is seventeen years old? It would appear he has utilized one of his proverbial nine lives already, hard to say how things will progress. Harry is in my office with me as I write this blog entry--purring to beat the band--so perplexing. Is he saying thanks for not saying good bye yet?? He appears to not be in pain--so we shall see.

I appreciate all the well wishes I have received over the last week, both here in this forum and privately. I will try to keep you abreast of the situation moving forward. At least for now, we don't have to say goodbye just yet.

    Grieving For Lost Pets!

I have stated in my previous blog entry about my soon to be scenario of loosing one of my pets. I thought in trying to move forward, asking you all to share how we all might prepare for handling loosing a friend and companion.

I guess the gamut of normal emotions are applicable. Crying.,being mad, crying some more. I would be curious how other people who have lost a pet have reacted?. I think that when one goes through this; it is best to try and seek and share others experiences.
Has anybody taken a couple days off from work to just cry and mourn? I am of the conviction to not try to "get over" it too soon. The longer one has a pet, it seems the bond is forged even stronger?
It is OK for you to be sad, and to mourn, and to cry, and to be mad. It is perfectly normal.

Do people seem like they need to "explain" what they are going through when a pet dies? If you lose a pet after many years of ownership and don't mourn -- is that normal behavior?

While experiencing the crying and anger, the lost sleep,. and the overall sadness, I feel it is time to remember the good times with your pet. The special times that make you laugh and make you cry - all at the same time.

I know in my heart -- and mind -- that I will see my pets again. I am trying to relive the times that we shared. Do you folks believe in looking at the situation not as a thing of the past, but as a part of who we are now?

I think during these times we have to let go of any and all guilt.

After their body is gone, their spirit, heart, and soul are here with us.

Perhaps finding your best memories re-enforces holding our friends close to our hearts, because that's where they are -- in our hearts.

I believe that the two of us will be together again someday.

In my case, when it soon happens, I believe he will be in heaven and that he will be happy, but I also believe that he will miss us as much as we will miss him.

I will HOPEFULLY still have my other cat for many more years? I can't imagine life without pets. I WILL ALWAYS have their presence in my life! I look forward to having you folks who are comfortable in doing so, please to share your experiences of how you dealt with it, with all of us.

Thanks in advance for your input.

Chronic Renal Failure & Menhaden Oil

Recent research findings have shown specific positive
nutritional results regarding the addition of
menhaden fish oil to a pets diet has provided
for animals diagnosed with Chronic Renal
    Failure.

I have some personal experience in the CRF arena, as my own two 17 Year old brother cats have been on this product for over four years. One is a diabetic, and he unfortunately after fours years is now starting to loose his battle with diabetes and renal failure. However, my vet fully concurs that our OO fish oil has served to prolong my Harrys life by strengthening his immune system over these last four years. His brother, Max has chronic pancreatitus, and he also has done well on our product for over 4 years. My cats are elderly, and like we humans, getting older sometimes has no justice, as the normal aging process does have its onset quite more rapidly as we and our pets become seniors.

I will very soon be saying good bye to my devoted friend and companion, Harry. This has been perhaps the saddest last few days of my wife and my own lives. We know we must do what is best for Harry as the inevitable day is rapidly approaching. Disseminating from Ocean Omega business to relate to everday life, my wife and I can take some solace in the fact that we did the right thing by introducing Harry to our Ocean Omega Fish Oil some four years ago, to prolong a good quality of life.

Todays entry has been somewhat self serving in the way of some sort of a catharsis for me, thanks to the readers of this blog for engratiating me by listening/reading this and giving me that opportunity.

Reflecting On Realizing How Valuable Animals Really Are

    The Right of Every Animal

After seeing so many recent posts regardingThe Buxton Kennel Rescue Campaign supporting animal rights, I too am compelled to express my thoughts on this very important topic.

If this were a time like long ago, when Native Americans, practiced living in tandem with the animals, we wouldn’t even be talking about this kind of animal neglect right now. We would be more in tune with the sacredness of the animals and their gifts to our soceity would be more readily apparent and appreciated.

Such travesties as The Michael Vick dog fighting mess, simply personifies, the total disregard for nature and its animals, and it is the greed in man that causes such abominations to animals. Greed has rapidly become a breeding ground for ignorance.

A large facet of the worlds populus has lost its own reverance, due to this lack of respect for nature , and our animals.

We need to be guided back to this earlier time to live and experience the land and the seasons and the ways of animals.

Today, in our time of great changes on our planet, many have no idea how much we need dedicated proponents of protecting nature, who can collectively converse about the seasons, the elements, GLOBAL WARMING,the ways of animals, and the cycles of life and whose primary interests are not in seeing dollar signs and continue to exploit our animals for the sake of the dollar.

Because, in order for atrocities on animals to stop, man needs to care again about having a spiritual relationship with nature.

“Relating” to something is key to “caring” about it.

Laws will NEVER completely stop these things, thus is why they continue to occur.

When they will truly stop, will be when man is impelled to have a spiritual realization that we all need to do so SOON if we are to perservere.

Preventing and Healing Cancer in Dogs, Cats, Horses and Other Animals

I was informed late last week that a client and friend of Ocean Omega; sisters dog has been diagnosed with lymphoma cancer. Over the last four years, unfortunately, we have had an increase in orders for our Ocean Omega Fish Oil, SPECIFICALLY for helping to induce appetite in helping to keep the pets nutritional levels high during their individual bouts with lymphoma. This is applicable to this friend and client , who also helps rescue dogs, she has utilized our OO Fish Oil within her household as well.

In the case of domesticated dogs. Cancer is on the rise, such developmental disorders are unfortunately becoming commonplace, life expectancy is shortening and the pets are becoming more fragile and it is becoming more expensive to maintain treatments nowadays, than ever before. There has also been a large international contingent built around processed dog food, health treatments, and more recently 'snack foods' for our dogs which is in very juxtaposition to the same trends in our own lives.

Dogs nowadays don't get to eat much raw or ripening meat and don't get to eat many bones. They don't get to catch their own prey or scavenge for food. They don't eat the raw stomach contents of dead animals they only ever get to eat cooked, commercial and chemical laden feeds. They don't get enough exercise and they often share the stress and the boredom of our own lifestyles. They are getting sicker and this is no surprise. Our dogs have somewhat less complicated lives and, although stress, boredom and artificial environments are emerging problems, their modern diet and subverted exercise patterns are some of the major contributing factors in the increase in Canine Cancers at this point in time.

Commercial dog food along with subverted exercise patterns in our modern dogs lives, is almost completely responsible for the decline in Canine health for the last few decades.Cancer is now the number one killer of most domestic animals. This fact raises a significant level of fear for those who know how difficult and painful it can be to endure the course of this disease in their pets. Cancer does not occur without cause - various environmental, dietetic, and vaccine- can most certainly be considered culprits that may cause cancer in pets. The holistic approach treats the whole animal, ignites the bodys’ internal healing force and stimulates the body's natural abilities to heal itself.

Previous research has shown that some polyunsaturated fatty acids, like those found in Ocean Omega Fish Oil, may help prevent the growth and spread of cancer tumors, and may help prevent cachexia -- the devastating weight loss and muscle wasting seen in some cancer patients despite adequate nutrition.

I extend my best wishes and my prayers for the well being of this clients pets, we much prefer to have our sales of fish oil products occur for more positive scenarios of the said sales. We are pleased that our fish oil has helped several of our clients pets enjoy a higher quality of life during this horrible disease.

    Alleviating Constipation in Cats

I recently received two new inquiries at our Ocean Omega website, both regarding how fish oil can be utilized in treating constipation in cats. One of the inquiries was sent in with a bad return e mail address, so for the slight chance that this individual may be reading this blog entry, heres the direct quote of how I answered the other potential OO clients same question.

I have two brother cats of my own, and they have both been on our Ocean Omega fish oil for four years, with good results in treating one cats diabetes, and the others chronic pancreatitus. My vet gives high praise for our fish oil in strengthening their immune sytems, and he concurs that it is contributory to their longevity, they just celebrated their 17th birthday.

I actually place our Ocean Omega fish oil directly as a top coat on one of my cats food, he prefers our Gold version, because he likes the fishy aroma and taste. His brother is very finicky, and we give him the Plus version, which is tasteless and odorless, and we have to give him the fish oil with an eye dropper directly administered down his gullet. We have clients who have cats that have suffered with both IBS and constipation, and the Ocean Omega fish oil has had good success in abating those afflictions in our clients cats.

A good quality catnip product, like The Catnip Queen; another fine Made In Maine Product, as well as real grass, combined with administering fish oil, can also be beneficial as treatments of constipation.

Constipation in pets, especially cats, is sometimes the result of dehydration, dietary indiscretion, or possibly an obstruction. Lack of exercise or a diet low in fiber may also contribute to this condition. In most cases, constipation in dogs and cats can be treated with a change in diet, adequate exercise and sufficient opportunities for the animal to relieve itself.

Try adding a tablespoon of bran or canned pumpkin to help the animal's stool hold moisture. Adding half a teaspoon of Ocean Omega fish oil mixed into his food each day should prove to be quite beneficial in
eliminating the constipation problem, strengthening the cats immune system, and it also will help to keep his coat soft and shiny.

All of our products are guaranteed for purity and quality, and our efficacy rate is substantial.

I hope this information serves as viable suggestions for your pets overall well being. We look forward to the opportunity of welcoming you aboard as our newest Ocean Omega client.

    What Products are working?

In one of my previous entries, I had mentioned Barbara Sanders, Proprietor of Howling Acres Argentine Dogos of Callands Virginia www.howling-acres.com. I have asked Barbara to be a contributing editor of sorts for this blog, as I value her opinions and knowledge.

One of my objectives when starting this OO Blog, was to not only self promote our OO Fish Oil Products, but to also hopefully open a forum to exchange stories of what you readers have found to be successful in utilizing other hollistic healthcare products, both for pets and HUMANS.

I want to do this within certain parameters, the chief one being, this is not an open invite to "billboard advertise" random products from A-Z . It must relate to hollistic healthcare, and those categories of products. I also want to clearly state this disclaimer here and now: Any and all products mentioned via comments on this blog are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent disease. Ocean Omega is not to be perceived as implying that we are necessarily endorsing any specific products that may be mentioned on our OO Blog.I want to simply avail readers information for their edification to decide yeah or nay for themselves, when considering to perhaps utilize any products that may be mentioned.

This is where Barbara Sanders will serve a vital role, she has a wealth of valuable experience and knowledge to proport. I have encouraged Barbara to please be a frequent contributor to this OO Blog as her busy schedule will allow. I look forward to her input as we move forward.

    Clients & Good Friends

In my previous entries, I alluded to the progression of Ocean Omega and establishing customer repoirre. When I stopped importing the Canadian Fish Oil Product, and started providing Ocean Omega Fish Oil, I had the great fortune and blessing to convert one of my Canadian Fish Oil clients.

Her name is Barbara Sanders, Proprietor of Howling Acres Argentine Dogos of Callands Virginia www.howling-acres.com Through many subsequent conversations, we actually discovered that Barbara too grew up in Portland; on the West End. The old adage of its a small world is very prevalent here.

Barbara quickly became a repeat customer of our Ocean Omega Fish Oil, and is our Southern Distributor of OO Products. She is a very reknown pet healthcare and holistic remedy expert. Before retiring to start her kennel in Virginia, Barbara had won many National Dog Show Awards with her Dogos.

Barbara has become not only a client , but a very near and dear friend to myself and Ocean Omega. She remains one of our strongest advocates. I have asked Barbara to be a contributing editor of sorts for this blog, as I value her opinions and knowledge. She is a sage to me not only in the pet healthcare arena, but also in life issues as she has led a most intriguing life.

I hope folks will continue to read my Ocean Omega Blog, and look for Barbaras' input, she is a true Yankee, open, candid, honest, and very willing to exchange pet healthcare philosophies, as she also co authors her own Dogo Chronicle Message Board.
