Fishmeal in Poultry Diets: Understanding what is and what isn't healthy in the valuable feed ingredient for poultry
Fishmeal in Poultry Diets: Menhaden Fish Meal
I presently have one client who has been utilizing our menhaden fish oil as an ingredient in her own"mash" concoction for feeding her hens to produce high quality and high content Omega Eggs. We are trying to entertain possibly bringing on a menhaden fish meal specifically geared towards poultry feed.High quality fishmeal is recognized as an excellent source of protein, energy, minerals and vitamins. The majority of this fishmeal produced is included in commercial diets for poultry, swine, dairy cattle, mink and fish.
Good quality fishmeal demands a higher price than other high protein feedstuffs. Its proper use, however, requires a knowledge of not only its nutrient profile but also WHAT NOT TO BE INCLUDED AS A PRESERVATIVE=Ethoxyquin. An understanding of fishmeal ingredients will give users a better understanding of how the various factors interact to influence the quality of fishmeal.
Why Menhaden Should Be The Species Of Choice?
Fish differ both in their ability to store oil as well as where in the body oil is stored.
Species of fish referred to as "lean fish" include such species as cod and haddock. In these species the oil is stored primarily in the liver. The flesh (fillets) contain very little oil. Fishmeal from this type of fish has a low oil content (2 to 6%) since the livers are removed before processing. The whole fish is not usually used since cod and haddock are prized for the fillets. Since the fillets are used for human consumption, the fishmeal from these lean fish are made principally from the offal (white fish frames) remaining after filleting. "White" fishmeal commonly contains a higher concentration of ash (minerals) since the bony frames (head and racks) of previously filleted cod, haddocks, etc. are used. White fishmeal constitutes only 10% of the world fishmeal production.
Menhaden fish used to manufacture fishmeal stores oil in certain parts of the flesh. These are high oil fish and, unlike the lean fish, are not prized for their fillets. They are commonly referred to as "industrial fish." Approximately 90% of the world fishmeal production is from this high oil species.
Menhaden fishmeal, as well as most other species of fish used for the production of fishmeal have a similar protein content that averages approximately 16% in the whole fish. This whole body protein content will vary by only plus or minus 2 to 3%. The fishmeal derived from the fish will, therefore, all be fairly similar in protein content. The oil (fat) content in the menhaden fish species is much more potent than other species content. The amount of oil in fishmeal is directly dependent on the efficiency of the oil removal at the time of processing.
Menhaden Fishmeal is Commonly Produced in the U.S.A.
In the U.S.A., the majority of the fishing industry is in the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. The main industrial fish harvested is menhaden. In fact, 98% of the fish oil produced in the U.S.A. is from menhaden, a high oil species. The oil is considered by fish processors to be a by-product of fishmeal production. This fish oil has an important place in animal diets.
Smaller quantities of fishmeal produced in the U.S.A. are made from herring, redfish, and white fish. These species of fishmeal are low in oil.
Why Menhaden Constitutes: Good Quality Fishmeal
Menhaden fish oil when correctly processed will produce a good quality brown powder which will average between 60% and 70% protein. The menhaden fish oil contained within the fishmeal will usually be in excess of 14%. The moisture level will commonly range from 6 to 12%. The ash content will range from 18% (more common for an industrial fishmeal) to 25% (more common for a white fish meal).
The odor of fishmeal, as would be expected, is that of fish. It is easily distinguished from other ingredients. If an acrid "scorched" smell is present this usually indicates overheating or scorching. If this occurs, a blackish dark-brown color is common and the quality of protein is usually affected in a negative manner.
I am working ardently to negotiate a feasible quantity and competitvely priced option for Ocean Omega to hopefully be able to provide this valuable poultry feed, as Ocean Omega continues to strive for more healthy pet products diversification within the confines of 2008. Stay tuned as more information will be forthcoming.

Feeding pets food that we enjoy is not only wrong, it can also be fatal. There are some foodstuffs that humans relish which cause illness and death if eaten by pets.
Chocolate, macadamia nuts and onions are good examples. Each of these foods contains chemicals which rarely cause problems for humans, but for dogs, these same chemicals can be deadly.
Chocolate contains theobromine, a compound that is a cardiac stimulant and a diuretic. When affected by an overdose of chocolate, a dog can become excited and hyperactive. Due to the diuretic effect, it may pass large volumes of urine and it will be unusually thirsty. Vomiting and diarrhea are also common. The effect of theobromine on the heart is the most dangerous effect. Theobromine will either increase the dog’s heart rate or may cause the heart to beat irregularly. Death is quite possible, especially with exercise. After their pet has eaten a large quantity of chocolate, many pet owners assume their pet is unaffected. However, the signs of sickness may not be seen for several hours, with death following within twenty-four hours.
Cocoa powder and cooking chocolate are the most toxic forms. A 10-kilogram dog can be seriously affected if it eats a quarter of a 250gm packet of cocoa powder or half of a 250gm block of cooking chocolate. These forms of chocolate contain ten times more theobromine than milk chocolate. Thus, a chocolate mud cake could be a real health risk for a small dog. Even licking a substantial part of the chocolate icing from a cake can make a dog unwell. Semi-sweet chocolate and dark chocolate are the next most dangerous forms, with milk chocolate being the least dangerous. A dog needs to eat more than a 250gm block of milk chocolate to be affected. Obviously, the smaller the dog, the less it needs to eat
Onions and garlic are other dangerous food ingredients that cause sickness in dogs, cats and also livestock. Onions and garlic contain the toxic ingredient thiosulphate. Onions are more of a danger.
Pets affected by onion toxicity will develop hemolytic anemia, where the pet’s red blood cells burst while circulating in its body.
At first, pets affected by onion poisoning show gastroenteritis with vomiting and diarrhea. They will show no interest in food and will be dull and weak. The red pigment from the burst blood cells appears in an affected animal’s urine and it becomes breathless. The breathlessness occurs because the red blood cells that carry oxygen through the body are reduced in number.
The poisoning occurs a few days after the pet has eaten the onion. All forms of onion can be a problem including dehydrated onions, raw onions, cooked onions and table scraps containing cooked onions and/or garlic. Left over pizza, Chinese dishes and commercial baby food containing onion, sometimes fed as a supplement to young pets, can cause illness. Onion poisoning can occur with a single ingestion of large quantities or with repeated meals containing small amounts of onion. A single meal of 600 to 800 grams of raw onion can be dangerous whereas a ten-kilogram dog, fed 150 grams of onion for several days, is also likely to develop anemia. The condition improves once the dog is prevented from eating any further onion While garlic also contains the toxic ingredient thiosulphate, it seems that garlic is less toxic and large amounts would need to be eaten to cause illness.
Macadamia nuts are another concern. The toxic compound is unknown but the affect of macadamia nuts is to cause locomotory difficulties. Dogs develop a tremor of the skeletal muscles, and weakness or paralysis of the hindquarters. Affected dogs are often unable to rise and are distressed, usually panting. Some affected dogs have swollen limbs and show pain when the limbs are manipulated.
Dogs have been affected by eating as few as six macadamia kernels (nuts without the shell) , also avoid macadamia butter.
Luckily, the muscle weakness, while painful, seems to be of short duration and all dogs can recover from the toxicity. All dogs should be taken to their veterinary surgeon.
Pets owners should not assume that human food is always safe for pets. When it comes to chocolate, onions, garlic and macadamia nuts, such foods should be avoided. Be sure that your pets can’t get into your stash of chocolates, that food scraps are disposed of carefully to prevent onion and garlic toxicity and that your dog is prevented from picking up macadamia nuts if you have a tree in your garden.

Glucosamine is a substance that naturally occurs in healthy joints. As dogs get older, their body seems to make less of it. It is the same thing with your body. This lower production of Glucosamine can lead to joint pain. When you give your dog Glucosamine to make up for the deficit, you are promoting healthy joints. Because a dogs body is familiar with Glucosamine, it is easily absorbed.It also contains vital nutrients that joints can use to stay healthy. And, of course, the nice thing about our Glucosamine is that it is from a vegetable source and not shellfish.The Apple Cider Vinegar contained within this product is a great digestive and immune system promoter as well.

GLUCOSAMINE
Let’s take a look inside your
dogs joints...
Cartilage is the cushioning between the bones that act as
a shock absorber, and is a building block of healthy cartilage
is glucosamine. Just like you, your dog’s body naturally
produces glucosamine. As your pet ages its body gradually
produces less glucosamine and the cartilage between the
joint can deteriorate, leaving your dog in pain. When you
give your pet glucosamine you are replacing this deficit and
promoting healthy joints.
ENP is the first to use REGENASURE Glucosamine in
its formula. REGENASURE is derived from a non-shellfish
source, eliminating allergies that can come from using traditional
shellfish glucosamine.
Fluid is also needed to lubricate the joint and allow it to
move freely. Chondroitin and Manganese act by drawing
fluid in around the joints and help to keep it there.
Tendons and Ligaments are the components most joint
supplements forget about! Tendons and ligaments are a
vital part of the joint. ENP includes ingredients like Horsetail,
Proline, Boron and Grape Seed to promote stronger,
healthier connective tissue.
Ocean Omega 3 Good for Joint Health, Even for Horses
Joint health is important for any athlete, and arthritis is painful at any age – whether you´re a human or a horse.
Supplemental dietary Ocean Omega Seahorse Brand Flavored Equine Fish Oil Omega 3 fatty acids reduce inflammation in younger horses that could become race or show horses.
OO Seahorse Flavored Equine Fish Oil Omega 3 extends the utility of horses that have been around the block, in other words, it reduces inflammation in the joints of older horses.
It has long been thought that Omega 3 fatty acids could help reduce joint inflammation in mammals. Other mammals such as dogs and cats have had a tremendous response to our Ocean Omega Fish Oil supplemental Omega 3 fatty acids.
The indicators of inflammatory response are lowest in horses fed naturally occurring Omega 3´s found in Ocean Omega Seahorse Brand Flavored Equine Fish Oil.
Mature horses with arthritis in the leg and foot joints with severity of arthritis, affected joints and age, fed the supplement Omega 3 fatty acids have lower synovial fluid white blood cell counts. Arthritic horses will typically have a much higher number of white blood cells than non-arthritic horses.

Ocean Omega 2007 Reflections on how we do business
"Let the past and its bad habits be done with."
Author-Unknown
I have asked myself the following series of questions and have had some
thoughts and reflections regarding doing business as OO as we move rapidly
towards 2008:
We are all creatures of habit. Most of us get up at the same time every day
and go to sleep at the same time every night. We tend to do the same things
the same way we did them before.
As a business owner we've developed processes to deal with situations that
occur frequently. How do you know when the processes in place aren't working
or could be improved? Do we have a process in place to reassess the way we
do things?
The topic or re-evaluation is on my mind at the moment as I'm currently
taking stock of the past year. I'm looking at things I've done well and
things done not so well in an effort to improve our business in the coming
year. My recent decision to change my active involvement in the hands on
affairs of OO is a first step along those lines.
When is it a good time to reassess how we do things?
At specific intervals - We might decide to take stock; every six months of
every year for example.
After a successful or failed project - The end of a project can be a good
time to evaluate not only that specific project, but business in general.
When we feel like we need to - Not necessarily the best method, but the one
that usually transpires.
The most common approach is to re-evaluate where we are on a consistent
basis at a set time. Year end might be a good time and likely how most New
Year's resolutions came to be. When we decide to assess things is less
important than making sure we do assess where we are from time to time.
Chances are there is some aspect of our business we're taking for granted
and a period of reflection can help identify what it might be. A look inside
can also help when it comes to taking our business in a new direction should
it need a new direction.
Can Taking a Step Back be the Best Way To Move Forward?
Sometimes the shortest distance between two points isn't a straight line.
Imagine you're working for a company and making $20/hr. It's not a bad
salary, but you want more. Unfortunately there's really no place to move up
in your company and at best you'll gain the occasional cost of living
increase while waiting and hoping for the possibility that some opportunity
will find it's way to you.
What if instead you left that job for another that paid $15/hr, but had a
much greater upside? Less money today so you could earn significantly more
tomorrow.
Stepping outside our comfort zone. The habits we all have are our comfort
zone. Our habits are safe, because we did them yesterday and know what to
expect from them today. Safe maintains the status quo. Safe is not
remarkable.
Giving up our comfort zone to take a chance on the unknown can feel like a
step back. It can also be exhilarating. Is it us? Depends on where we are
and how happy we are to be there.
I plan on spending some time this month as the year winds down evaluating
where I've been, thinking about where I want to go, and deciding if what
I've been doing will get me there.
When was the last time we took a long look at the way we do business? Is
everything running smoothly or could it stand a little improvement. When was
the last time we re-evaluated how we do things?
"The successful person makes a habit of doing what the failing person
doesn't like to do."
-Thomas Edison
How Many Omega 3's Are There Per Teaspoon of Ocean Omega Fish Oil
One of the most commonly asked questions at our OO website is: How many Omega 3's of EPA and DHA are there per "Teaspoon" of your fish oil? We could go into some elaborate weighings of teaspoons, but, that would be somewhat meaningless, since different people might fill a"teaspoon" to different levels.
Even different teaspoons from different, or the same, manufacturers would hold different amounts. A teaspoon out of the kitchen drawer is not designed to be used as a precision measuring device. The answer is somewhat scientific in its composition.
Because the fish oil is derived from a living source, you have to recognize the fact that different batches of oil will have slightly differing specific gravities.
Since the fatty acid composition will vary with what the fish consumed,
the EPA and DHA will vary from batch to batch.
Best Calculations would be as follows:
one standard teaspoon has a
nominal volume of 5 ml.
OO Plus and OO Gold fish oil both have a specific gravity of 0.9293,
Rounded up to make it 0.93.
Therefore, a teaspoon will hold approximately 4.65 grams, or 4650
milligrams.
Both OO-G and OO-P have an EPA range listed at 11-15, with a typical
average of 14.16%. My latest data has the EPA at
12.73 based on an annual production composite sample. Utilizing a
value of 13% .
OO-G and OO-P have a DHA range listed at 9-13 and 11-15, respectively.
Both have mean values of 10.26%. Again, based on the annual production
composite samples, the latest data has the values at 12.31%.
Utilizing 12%, the theorem would extend out as follows:
EPA: 1 tsp = 4650 mg (with 13% EPA) = 604.5 mg EPA.
(I'd round that to 600 mg)
DHA: 1 tsp = 4650 mg (with 12% DHA) = 558.0 mg DHA.
(I'd round that to 550 mg)
Conclusion:
per " tsp" of OO Fish Oil there are 600 mg of EPA and 550 mg of DHA
During this time of Holiday Season mind set being on " presents" for our pets; be sure to have some "presence" of mind to incorporate the following:
Suggested Items To Have In Your Pet's First Aid Kit:
Many pet owners have a first aid kit for themselves and their children they keep around the house, but what about for our pets? Especially those of us who may live more rurally or a good distance from medical or veterinarian assistance.
It's important for pet owners to also keep a first aid kit in the house for their pets.
You never know when something is going to go wrong. If you have everything together and in a certain place, you won't be worrying or wondering where it's at when something does happen.
You should consider storing first aid items in a transportable, durable, water-resistant boxes, such as a tackle boxes. Be sure to label it clearly and store it where you can find it readily.
Pet owners should include a list of emergency phone numbers in the kit to quickly get in touch with a veterinarian.
In almost all cases, a pet owner should at least call the vet, even if it is just to see how to treat a minor cut . For anything more than something very minor, take your pet to the vet. It's always a good idea to call ahead to make sure the veterinarian will be there and be ready for your arrival.
It is important to have hydrogen peroxide, activated charcoal and eyedroppers in case your pet ingests toxic materials. The peroxide will induce vomiting and the charcoal helps keep the toxins from being absorbed, while the eyedropper would be used to give the recommended dosage.
For cuts, abrasions and minor wounds, keep the following items in the kit:
* One- and two-inch adhesive tape
* Two-inch roll gauze to make a muzzle in an emergency
* Gauze sponges
* Isopropyl alcohol
* Chlorhexadine or povidone iodine (antiseptic)
* Contact lens saline solution
* Two-inch and four-inch stretch gauze
* Scissors
* Tweezers
* Nonstick dressing (Telfa)
* Nonstick bandage (vet wrap)
* Antibiotic ointment
* Absorbent maxi pads
For penetrating chest wounds, the kit should include petroleum or KY Jelly to coat the entrance of the wound and plastic food wrap to seal the wound airtight.
Other items a pet owner should keep in the kit include:
* Newspaper to roll up and make a splint or to line something to keep it clean
* Rectal thermometer
* Three large garbage bags for sanitation on the way to the veterinarian's office
* Book on pet first aid
* Signed treatment authorization form so pet sitter/or others can take animal to veterinarian for treatment in your absence
Other good items to have available (that may not fit in the kit):
* Two-liter bottles or milk cartons to fill with warm water for heating
* Clean bath towels or roll of paper towels
* Blankets
* Elizabethan collar or instructions of how to make one to keep pet from chewing at wounds
* Plywood board to move the pet safely
The pet owner should incorporate items that they know their pets will respond to, the point is to think ahead and be prepared as possible for lifes little
mis-haps.

The Majestic Argentine Dogo Friends of Ocean Omega
One of the most Majestic Breeds of Dog within our circle of Ocean Omega friends and clients , is the Dogo.
I have had the privilege and honor of knowing the breed and providing our Ocean Omega fish oil to the proprietor and "ALFA" of Howling Acres Argentine Dogos. Here is more about this facinating breed submitted by Barbara.
El Dogo Argentino:by Barbara Sanders
I own and operate Howling Acres a small hobby kennel in the mountains of
Virginia. I have been involved with the Dogo Argentino race of dog for
about 20 years. I have spent much of that time working on ancestry of
the breed and the variations in different lines that have developed since
the breed originated. I have spent all of that time exclusively dedicated to
the preservation of what I have found to be a most incredible creature. A
dog created in Argentina in one lifetime by two brothers who had a dream and followed their path.
I have shown my dogs and captured many Championships with one of the
most outstanding dogs of all time. I have trained in agility, obedience and
search and rescue and have found that the limitations of this race of dog
just do not exist. I have studied dog behavior and I have found that all
I have learned is not in the many books I have read but in the dog itself.
I am well taught by a species that does not speak in my language, but in
the universal language of nature, it is loud and clear.
This is a created breed comprised of 10 breeds that were blended
together to make the ultimate hunting dog. A designer dog so to speak. It seems that the best qualities of the 10 breeds emerged and blossomed into one of the finest and most intelligent dogs ever. While this dog is the ultimate
hunter, much like a Cheetah, it is also a great athlete, a loyal companion,
a family protector, beautiful to behold.
When one deals with a dog of pure intelligence it takes time to learn to
listen. It is a human trait to want to talk but the key to understanding
is in listening. A dog will never take it eyes off you. It is summing you
up by watching your body language. This is the key to making contact with
a canine and creating a medium of mutual understanding. Every move of
human and dog has meaning. Dogs are not mind readers and so know when we are feeling sad. We carry ourselves in a different manner when that or any
condition exists and the dogs perceive the difference and relate it to
our other behaviors. Body language.
Dogs are migratory animals in that each day is a new day. Dogs live in
the moment and, while they do have memories they use as tools to
differentiate between conditions, they do not live in the past nor the future.They
feel no guilt, a human trait. They are not jealous, human trait. They do not
miss you when you leave for a time, they have no concept of time. They sleep
until you return. While they appear to be happy to see us all things
being equal they relax as their world has order.
We do not "train" our dogs but if we are diligent we communicate our
desires and the do responds. Dogs have many behaviors that may at times seem strange to us but there is a reason for everything they do. It is up to
us to understand and work within that parameter. Dogs are not vicious,
mean or violent. Again human traits that we place on our dogs. It is not our
duty to change a dog but to work with the qualities that a particular dog has
and find common ground.
