Historically, the humane movement has been at a sizeable disadvantage in the fight to pass meaningful public policy reforms to protect animals. Our opponents have much larger war chests for legislative and political work. Now the Humane Society Legislative Fund (HSLF) is working to level the playing field for animals. Formed in 2004 as a separate lobbying affiliate of The Humane Society of the United States, the HSLF has three primary goals:

to help pass animal protection laws at the state and federal level.
to educate the public on animal protection issues.
to support humane candidates for office.
In 2006, our first year of electioneering activity, the HSLF helped win landslide victories for animals on statewide ballot measures and to defeat the nation's least animal-friendly member of Congress, senator, and governor. In the U.S. Senate, 24 of the 28 HSLF-endorsed candidates were victorious. And 273 of the 301 HSLF-backed U.S. House candidates were elected to the 110th Congress. Our 86-percent win rate in the Senate and 91-percent win rate in the House is a remarkable beginning.

Ocean Omega Helping 250 Rescued Dogs

Judge: Dogs from raid now property of state
A Buxton couple, charged with running an unlicensed kennel and animal cruelty, fail to show for a hearing.

By SETH HARKNESS, Staff Writer

September 27, 2007

BIDDEFORD — A judge ruled on Wednesday that hundreds of dogs that were seized from a couple's kennel in Buxton last month are now the property of the state.

John and Heidi Frasca, owners of J'Aime Kennel, were accused of running a large-scale puppy mill after police raided their property and seized 249 dogs.

The couple failed to show up at Wednesday's custody hearing in Biddeford District Court, and Judge Christine Foster ruled that the dogs should be placed under permanent state care. The Frascas have three weeks to appeal.

In the five weeks since the raid – the largest at an animal- breeding facility in state history – officials with the state Animal Welfare Program have been testing the dogs for infectious diseases. Court documents filed this week indicate that the animals at J'Aime Kennel had numerous diseases and parasites, some of which are transmissible to humans.

Christine Fraser, an Animal Welfare Program veterinarian, reported that many of the dogs were suffering from a variety of ailments related to poor medical care and hygiene.

Fraser's report said 57 of the seized dogs tested positive for giardia, a parasite that can be passed to humans. Fraser also found that 21 dogs tested positive for sarcoptic mange, a skin disease commonly known as scabies.

Nearly half of the dogs had some form of dental disease, and two had fractures in their front legs that were never treated, leaving the animals with limbs they could not use.

"If not for the animals' being seized and provided medical treatment, many of those found at the kennel, mostly puppies, would not have survived," Fraser wrote.

Fraser said the state will care for the dogs for the three-week appeal period and put them up for adoption when they return to health. That will take at least a month, she said.

Steve Jacobsen, director of the Animal Welfare Society in Kennebunk, one of the agencies that are helping to care for the animals, said the group is not yet prepared to field requests from people who are interested in adoptions.

At the time of the raid, police issued 14 summonses to the Frascas related to operating an unlicensed kennel, and three more regarding animal cruelty and failure to provide animals with medical treatment.

On Wednesday, York County District Attorney Mark Lawrence said his office is reviewing the evidence to determine whether any criminal charges are warranted.

Acting as their own attorneys, the Frascas filed a notice with the court this week claiming that the legal actions taken against them were corrupt. The judge struck the six-page document from the record at Wednesday's hearing.

"It's a fraudulent court," John Frasca said in a phone interview Wednesday.

The case has drawn the attention of people who are concerned about the well-being of animals, and dozens of volunteers have helped state officials care for the dogs over the past five weeks.

On Tuesday, about 15 people stood outside Biddeford District Court with signs condemning breeding facilities that pursue profits at the expense of animal welfare.

Robert Fisk, director of Maine Friends of Animals in Falmouth, said the state has a comprehensive set of laws to protect animals but the problems uncovered at the Frascas' kennel show the need for more aggressive enforcement.

"It's an important case because of the numbers involved," he said. "It brings out the fact that backyard breeders and puppy mills are a fact of life in Maine that most people don't realize."

I think that Frascas has found the "new wave" that now exists in the legal system. Historically they have ignored several hearings and code violation notices. The down side? The state removes the animals and foots the bill for their shelter and health care. Cost to Frascas? None! Ignore the custody hearing and the result is that they have no ongoing financial responsibility for the animals. The State is still in the process of determining if any criminal charges are warranted. Who pays for the care of the animals while final custody is being determined. Wake up people! There has to be a down side to disobeying the law.

Can we put them in a dirty, urine soaked kennel with feces all over the place and not feed the Frasca's or give them no medical attention? Animals are inocent victims who can not protect themselves. Frasca's.....you make me want to puke all over you!

Gee, Mr.Frasca, I guess you'd know a little bit about corrupt and fradulent, huh?

To claim innocence in the face of such evidence is pathetic. The cruel exploitation of these poor animals nothing short of criminal. The Frascas should be prosecuted to fullest extent of the law and be required to pay some, if not all of the dog's expenses. Many of these expenses would have been paid by them anyway, if they had been reputable, responsible and caring breeders.

I think the most shocking part of this story is that the Frascas didn't show up for their court date. If they believe that they were not in the wrong, I would have assumed they would have appeared to state their case and protect their property. I know there are many reasons that people represent themselves; however, at first sniff, it comes across as arrogant.

Sunday Morning Pet Jokes

A lady approaches her priest and tells him "Father, I have a problem. I have two female talking parrots, but they only know how to say one thing."

"What do they say?" the priest inquired.

"They only know how to say, 'Hi, we're prostitutes. Want to have some fun?'"

"That's terrible!" the priest exclaimed, "but I have a solution to your problem. Bring your two female parrots over to my house and I will put them with my two male talking parrots whom I taught to pray and read the bible. My parrots will teach your parrots to stop saying that terrible phrase and your female parrots will learn the joys of praise and worship."

"Thank you!" the woman responded.

The next day the woman brings her female parrots to the priest's house. His two male parrots are holding the rosary beads and praying in their cage. The lady puts her two female parrots in with the male parrots and the female parrots say "Hi we're prostitutes, want to have some fun?"

One male parrot looks over at the other male parrot and exclaims, "Put the beads away, brother. Our prayers have been answered!"

It is illegal for hens to lay eggs before 8 am and after 4 pm in Norfolk, Virginia.

Ducks quacking after 10 pm in Essex Falls, New Jersey are breaking the law.

Madison, Wisconsin, will not allow joint custody of a family pet when a couple divorces - the animal is legally awarded to whoever happens to have possession of it at the time of the initial separation.

Dogs in Foxpoint, Wisconsin, may not bark profusely, snarl, or make any menacing gestures.

In Texas, it's illegal to put graffiti on someone else's cow.

It is illegal to ride a mule down Lang, Kansas' Main Street in August, unless the animal is wearing a straw hat.

Over in Berea, Kentucky and also in Willamantic, Connecticut, horses are not allowed out on the streets and highways at night unless the animal has a "bright" red taillight securely attached to its rump.

Horses may not wear cowbells inside the city limits of Tahoe City, California.

In Washington, though, every cow wandering the streets of Seattle must be wearing a cowbell.

Ocean Omega Shipping Rates

I had written an entry in our Ocean Omega Blog several entries ago, pertaining to shipping costs for our small business. After much deliberation, and in an everlasting on-going battle to keep our prices competitive, and NOT EXTEND A PRICE INCREASE on our fish oil, we have decided to go with the current Weight by LBS rate chart listed below; as to how we charge for shipping.

We have placed this rate chart on our OO website ordering page http://www.oceanomega.com/Ordering.html
for our customers benefit.

This should be perceived as a tool for ALL customers to pre-calculate their shipping costs to be incurred; unique to the size bottles of our fish oil that they are ordering. This is STILL at a reduced shipping rate, as OO continues to absorb a portion of the shipping costs.

Animal Carcasses In our Pets Foods

I recently received an e mail from The Humane Society of the United States, regarding an article as to how they recently worked with local police and animal groups to rescue nearly 100 dogs bound for the dog meat trade. Please see this link for more details:

https://community.hsus.org/humane/notice-description.tcl?newsletter_id=14752362

This precipitated me to once again author a blog regarding What is in our pet commercially produced pet foods, INCLUDING DEAD CARCASSES OF ANIMALS!.

Meat By-products: Pet grade meat by-products consist of organs and parts not desired or not fit for human consumption. This can include organs, bones, blood and fatty tissue. It can also include brains, feet, heads, intestines and any other internal parts. Unbelievably, by-products can also contain cancerous or diseased tissue containing parasites.

The pet food industry is an 11 billion dollar a year, unregulated operation
that feeds on the garbage that otherwise would and should end up in a
landfill. Pet food manufacturers have become masters at getting pets to eat
things they would normally turn their nose up at.

Pet food scientists have learned that it's possible to take a mixture of
inedible garbage, fortify it with artificial vitamins and minerals, preserve
it so it can sit on the grocery shelf for more than a year, add dyes to make
it attractive and then extrude it into whimsical shapes, making it appealing
to us humans so we will purchase it. Unfortunately what makes up most of dog
and cat food today comes from the rendering plant. To render, as defined in
Webster's Dictionary, is "to process as for industrial use; to render
livestock carcasses and to extract oil from fat, blubber, etc., by melting."
Some things that go into rendering are:

* Spoiled rotten meat from the supermarket, styrofoam wrap and all.

* Road kill that can't be buried on the roadside.

* The "4-D's" of cattle; dead, dying, diseased and disabled

* Rancid restaurant grease

* Euthanized pets, this is NO joke!

When chickens, lambs, cattle, pigs and other animals are slaughtered for
food, usually only the lean muscle is cut off for human consumption. This
leaves about 50% of a carcass left over. These leftovers are what become
what we so commonly find on pet food labels such as "meat and bone meal" or
"by-products". So basically what pets are eating are lungs, ligaments,
bones, blood and intestines.

When dead animals from pastures are picked up, they many not be rendered for
up to a week after they have died. Because of this it is estimated that E.
coli bacteria contaminates more than 50% of meat materials. The rendering
process destroys the E. coli bacteria, but it does not eliminate the
endotoxins bacteria that is released when they die. These endotoxins, which
can cause sickness and disease, are not tested for by pet food
manufacturers.

Slaughterhouses where cattle, pigs, lambs and other animals meet their fate
provide more fuel for rendering. After slaughter, heads, feet, skin, hair,
feathers, carpel and tarsal joints and mammary (milking) glands are removed.
This material is sent to rendering. Animals that have died on their way to
slaughter are also rendered. Cancerous tissue, tumors and worm infested
organs are rendered. Injection sites, blood clots and any other inessential
parts are rendered. Stomach and bowels are rendered. Contaminated material
including blood is rendered. Carcasses with high levels of drugs or
pesticides in excess of limits prescribed under the FDA (not fit for human
consumption) are rendered.

At the rendering plant, slaughterhouse material, supermarket refuse, rancid
restaurant grease, dead livestock, road kill and euthanized pets are dumped
into huge containers. A machine slowly grinds the entire mess. After it is
chipped or shredded, it is cooked at 220 - 270 degrees F. for approximately
20 minutes to one hour. The grease or tallow rises to the top where it is
removed from the mixture. This is the source of animal fat in most pet foods
on the market today. The remaining material, the raw, is then put into a
press where the moisture is squeezed out, we now have the meat and bone meal
that is added to most pet foods today.

Animals wouldn't normally eat this stuff in the wild, so why will they eat
it out of their bowls? Their noses are tricked by the smell of it. Pet food
manufacturers are masters at getting a pet to eat something they would
normally turn their nose up at.

These flavors usually come from rancid restaurant grease, you know from
those big dumpsters you see in the back parking lot. This grease is often
outside for weeks, exposed to extreme temperatures with no regard for its
future use. The rancid grease is then picked up by fat blenders who mix the
animal and vegetable fats together, stabilize them with powerful
antioxidants to prevent further spoilage, then they sell it to pet food
manufacturers. Rancid, heavily preserved fats are extremely difficult to for
animals to digest and can lead to a host of pet health problems including
digestive upsets, diarrhea, gas and bad breath. These fats are sprayed
directly onto the kibble or nuggets to make an otherwise distasteful product
palatable.

Two thirds of the pet food manufactured today contain synthetic
preservatives, of the remaining one third, 90% includes ingredients already
stabilized by synthetic preservatives. Be wary of pet foods that advertise
as preservative free, if they using animal by-products or ingredients that
have been rendered they will mostly like contain preservatives. Natural
preservatives such as Rosemary and Vitamin E are used by quality
manufacturers of natural pet foods not containing artificial/chemical
preservatives. However, Pet food manufacturers are not required to list
preservatives they themselves have not added. Here are some of the chemical
preservatives that are used in mass-produced pet food today:

* BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole) - known to cause kidney and liver
dysfunction

* BHT (butylated hydroxytolulene) - known to cause kidney and liver
dysfunction

* Ethoxyquin - suspected of causing cancer

* Propylene glycol (also used as automotive antifreeze) causes destruction
of red blood cells-and is also commonly found in many treats such as
Pedigree Dentabone/DentaStix etc

Hip Dysplasia In Dogs

We recently received a very nice customer testimonial that stated Ocean Omega Fish Oil has helped their animal with hip dysplasia by strengthening loose joints and supporting growth and maintenance of connective tissue : heres her direct quote:

"I met you last month at Woofstock in Damariscotta, ME. I wanted to give you a testimonial about how well your product has worked for my 8 year old
Sheltie Sadie. Sadie has had hip dysplasia since she was born. I have treated her with glucosamine and condroitin since she was 12 weeks old. This winter
when we were having a particularly cold snap her hind end gave out while she was trying to go to the bathroom. We were both upset very much by this,
and I had to carry her into the house where it was warm before she could walk normally again. This happened several times. I mentioned the problem to
Aubrey at The Animal House and she suggested trialing your product. I was concerned that Sadie would not like the flavor, but she has shown no sign of
disliking it. I was also concerned that the oil would give her loose bowels, but that has not happened. Since using your product she has not had any
episodes of falling down. Sadie also has very dry skin and skin allergies. I notice that her coat is more shiny since starting on your product. Sadie also
has more energy and runs around more. I would highly recommend your product to anyone who has a dog with hip dysplagia. Thank you for a great
product. " Beckie D.

Who suffers from Hip Dysplasia?

Broadly speaking, hip dysplasia (a malformed hip socket) strikes generally in larger breeds of dogs although not exclusively with them. This excessive movement in the affected joint caused calcium deposits, chronic inflammation problems and this all adds to greater degeneration in the joint. It is interesting to note that this condition is not present at birth; it develops in the puppy stage.

There is also some controversy about what causes hip dysplasia. Some say it is genetic but this is not conclusive. In fact, a closer reading of the literature reveals some other factors.

The issue with larger breed dogs is weight. And of course, the more they weigh the greater the problem is.

Our regular OO Notes blog readers know that I am a very strong advocate for using menhaden fish oil in dealing with hip dysplasia and other arthritis related conditions in family pets. The success reported by pet owners seems to bear the conclusion that it is a highly successful avenue to follow.

The reason for using a liquid formula menhaden fish oil is because it is much more highly absorbed than a pill or capsule form. In fact, clinical studies reveal that only about 800-850 mg. a day is required to be highly effective.

In reviewing the clinical studies, it is interesting to note that researchers have also implicated a Vitamin C deficiency in the development of hip dysplasia (chronic sub clinical scurvy.) If that is the case, then the theory would be that the hip forms poorly because of a weakness in the ligaments and muscles that surround the joint. For that reason, Ocean Omega Fish Oil liquid combined with a Vitamin C supplement, should provide optimum results

Prevention

Since hip dysplasia begins in early puppyhood, this is also an indication that you should not wait until you see signs of arthritis in your dog before using Ocean Omega Menhaden Fish Oil. Using doses appropriate to their body weight would be a good way to help the cartilage in your pet's joints now.

Diet

Pets that are fed as much natural food as possible stand a better chance against developing arthritis, as well as when they are coping with it. The more natural the food you feed your pet, the better off they will be in the long run.

What’s right?

I don’t think there is any “perfect” solution as to what a more natural diet should be for your pet. I do recommend that if you are using commercially manufactured foods, that you use caution as to what you buy.

Sunday Morning Pet Jokes

A game of animal football
The animals were bored. Finally, the lion had an idea. "I know a really exciting game that the humans play called football. I've seen it on T.V."

He proceeded to describe it to the rest of the animals and they all got excited about it so they decided to play. They went out to the field and chose up teams and were ready to begin.

The lion's team received. They were able to get two first downs and then had to punt. The mule punted and the rhino was back deep for the kick. He caught the ball, lowered his head and charged. First, he crushed a roadrunner, then two rabbits. He gored a wildebeast, knocked over two cows, and broke through to daylight, scoring six.

Unfortunately, they lacked a placekicker, and the score remained 6 - 0.

Late in the first half the lion's team scored a touchdown and the mule kicked the extra point. The lion's team led at halftime 7 - 6. In the locker room, the lion gave a peptalk.

"Look you guys. We can win this game. We've got the lead and they only have one real threat. We've got to keep the ball away from the rhino, he's a killer. Mule, when you kick off be sure to keep it away from the rhino."

The second half began. Just as the mule was about to kick off, the rhino's team changed formation and the ball went directly to the rhino. Once again, the rhino lowered his head and was off running. First, he stomped two gazelles. He skewered a zebra, and bulldozed an elephant out of the way. It looked like he was home free. Suddenly at the twenty yard line, he dropped over dead. There were no other animals in sight anywhere near him. The lion went over to see what had happened. Right next to the dead rhino he saw a small centipede.

"Did you do this?" he asked the centipede.

"Yeah, I did." the centipede replied.

The lion retorted, "Where were you during the first half?"

"I was putting on my shoes."

He is a very smart dog
I went to the cinema the other day and in the front row was an old man and with him was his dog. It was a sad funny kind of film, you know the type. In the sad part, the dog cried his eyes out, and in the funny part, the dog laughed its head off. This happened all the way through the film. After the film had ended, I decided to go and speak to the man.

"That's the most amazing thing I've seen," I said. "That dog really seemed to enjoy the film."

The man turned to me and said, "Yeah, it is. He hated the book."

Introducing Horses to Fish Oil

One of the common inquiries I receive at our website, is from horse owners asking about flavored fish oil for equines. They often ask how do I get my horse to accept the flavorings of your fish oil?

A very helpful suggestion that I received from one of our clients is:a little Vicks salve in the horse's
nose would make it to where the horse would eat the fish oil. The Vicks
salve makes it so the horse cannot smell or taste the fish oil. This suggestion came from someone who has been caring for horses for over 60 years.

I am consistently asking and looking for readers of this blog to please submit comments. Should any of you know of additional "tricks'" of the trade for introducing horses to fish oil flavorings, please do share them with us.

If anybody has tried the Vicks Salve, please do let me know that as well.

Think About What Second Hand Smoke Does To Pets

I often get inquiries at our website about how our fish oil is beneficial for pets with cancer. Some of these folks making these inquiries also state that they are at a loss as to what might accelerate the on set of cancer in their pets. I have disscussed the diet of their pets , but another significant contributor can be second hand smoke for those pets living in a "smoking household".

Secondhand smoke is a health threat to pets as well as humans.
It has been in the news for years about how secondhand smoke is a health threat to nonsmokers. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that secondhand smoke is attributed with killing thousands of adult nonsmokers annually.

If smoking is that harmful to human beings, it would make sense that secondhand smoke would have an adverse effect on pets that live in the homes of smokers.
There have been a number of scientific papers recently that have reported the significant health threat secondhand smoke poses to pets. Secondhand smoke has been associated with oral cancer and lymphoma in cats, lung and nasal cancer in dogs, as well as lung cancer in birds.

A study conducted recently at Tuft College of Veterinary Medicine found a strong correlation between secondhand smoke and certain forms of cancer in cats. The number of cats with mouth cancer, also known as squamous cell carcinoma, was higher for those animals living in smoking environments versus those felines living in a smoke-free home. In addition, cats that lived with smokers for five or more years had an even higher incidence of this type of oral cancer.

One reason cats are so susceptible to secondhand smoke is because of their grooming habits. Cats constantly lick themselves while grooming, therefore they lick up the cancer-causing carcinogens that accumulate on their fur. This grooming behavior exposes the mucous membrane of their mouth to the cancer-causing carcinogens.

Malignant lymphoma is another type of cancer that cats that live with smokers have a higher risk of getting. This cancer occurs in the lymph nodes and cats are twice as likely to have this type of cancer compared to cats living in a non-smoking home. This form of cancer is fatal to three out of four cats within 12 months of developing the cancer.

Secondhand smoke is greatly associated with the increased occurrence of cancer in the nose and sinus area among dogs. Research also indicates a slight association with lung cancer.

A recent study conducted at Colorado State University shows that there is a higher incidence of nasal tumors in dogs living in a home with secondhand smoke compared to dogs living in a smoke free environment,The increased incidence was specifically found among the long nosed breed of dogs. Shorter or medium nosed dogs showed higher rates for lung cancer.

The longer nosed breeds of dogs have a great surface area in their noses that is exposed to the carcinogens. This also provides more area in which the carcinogens can accumulate. The carcinogens tend to build up on the mucous membranes of long nosed dogs so not as much reaches the lungs.

Unfortunately, dogs affected with nasal cancer normally do not survive more than one year.

The reason short and medium nose dogs have a higher occurrence of lung cancer is because their shorter nasal passages aren´t as effective at accumulating the inhaled secondhand smoke carcinogens. This results in more carcinogens reaching the lungs.

Pet birds also are victims of secondhand smoke. A bird´s respiratory system is hypersensitive to any type of pollutant in the air.

The most serious consequences of secondhand smoke exposure in birds are pneumonia or lung cancer. Other health risks include eye, skin, heart and fertility problems.

Secondhand smoke is not the only danger faced by pets that live in smoke filled environments. Poisoning is another risk they face.

Curious pets can eat cigarettes and other tobacco products if the products aren´t stored properly, When ingested, this can cause nicotine poisoning, which can be fatal.

It is important, both for the health of pets and others living in the household, that the smoker has a designated area in which to smoke that is physically separated from the home. In addition, always keep cigarettes, cigarette butts and other tobacco products put away.

A better choice that could enhance your chances of enjoying a healthier lifestyle with your family and pets would be to stop smoking altogether.

Shipping Costs - when to charge, when not to charge

Shipping and handling fees represent one of the biggest quandries that Ocean Omega faces today. Shipping charges are tough to convey to consumers; so we try to lay out our rate chart based on weight of our product unique to the individual order being placed.

We initially offered free shipping on first orders for our first two+ years of existence. However, the cost of doing business for small proprietors such as ourselves, we just couldn't survive covering the freight costs

Ocean Omega tries to stay innovative and FAIR in our shipping policy, so we offer a reduced rate to simply pass on shipping costs to consumers.

We simply cannot loose money by offering free shipping. "Those days are gone." I have been thinking of ways that we can perhaps implement some sort of a "possible free shipping", but more likely a higher percentage of discount on the shipping rate at our OO website.

This will probably entail my business partner and I adding some sort of functionality to our shopping cart that figures out how much more our customers would need to spend in order to qualify for free/or discounted shipping when placing their order. - I am working out the "kinks" on this marketing strategy, and I could use some survey type input from you readers for how you may perceive this theorem as a value added service from Ocean Omega

For example: these are rough scenarios but for lets say Ocean Omega were to offer something like:"Free shipping on orders exceeding $100 or more" Actual figures would need to be determined-this is just an example for this entry in todays OO Blog. Would you potential and existing OO customers find this a viable and appealing option??

I think free shipping works for very large merchants because they have massive promotional budgets, but not so much for small and medium sized proprietors like ourselves. I constantly strive to offer as low a price as I can and we charge fair shipping rates by absorbing some of the costs ourselves.

I am of the consensus that most shoppers are looking for low prices and expect to pay shipping at small/medium sized online websites such as our own Ocean Omega website.

When customers understand the high shipping costs BASED ON WEIGHT of the product, especially when far geographics for the end recipient of our fish oil are involved, i.e West Coast shipments,. I think they then more readily accept incurring shipping charges per order.

I would encourage your input as to whether an option to increase your items in your shopping cart by a MODEST amount, to receive free shipping, would be perceived as VALUE ADDED SERVICE by Ocean Omega.

I look forward to fielding your suggestions and responses, as we are seriously taking a look at updating our checkout system on our OO website to accommodate these options.

The Nine Lives of Cats

Well My wife and I have just returned from a huge consultation with our vet. It would appear that my cat Harry, who is suffering from diabetes induced renal failure, STILL has several potential quality months left.

After his readings for kidney failure were so poor last week ( 75% kidneys are gone), we decided to consider hydrating Harry intraveinously. The vet administered the first bag of hydration fluids today in her office. We also have Harry on food dedicated to kidney health, and she said to most definitely keep giving Harry our OO fish oil.She is confident this fish oil is serving his immune system quite nicely to fight his battle with renal failure.

This past week has been so tumultuous, as the beginning of the week looked pretty bleek. Then as the week progressed Harry seemed more perky, and he came upstairs last night to sleep with us on the bed (his normal routine), that he had abandoned for the previous last ten days or so? He also demanded that his head be rubbed in the middle of the night, again another normal routine.

Then at his breakfast time this morning, he raced to his dish for food, wrestling with his brother along the way, it was like he has revisited his youth. So we had tried to prepare ourselves all week long for his very possible euthanization today, but in lieu of his apparent turn around, we decided to give the hydration process a whirl.

The vet seemed to say, without having a crystal ball, that he may respond well and still have several months left. Again the reality of it is ; he is seventeen years old? It would appear he has utilized one of his proverbial nine lives already, hard to say how things will progress. Harry is in my office with me as I write this blog entry--purring to beat the band--so perplexing. Is he saying thanks for not saying good bye yet?? He appears to not be in pain--so we shall see.

I appreciate all the well wishes I have received over the last week, both here in this forum and privately. I will try to keep you abreast of the situation moving forward. At least for now, we don't have to say goodbye just yet.

Grieving For Lost Pets!

I have stated in my previous blog entry about my soon to be scenario of loosing one of my pets. I thought in trying to move forward, asking you all to share how we all might prepare for handling loosing a friend and companion.

I guess the gamut of normal emotions are applicable. Crying.,being mad, crying some more. I would be curious how other people who have lost a pet have reacted?. I think that when one goes through this; it is best to try and seek and share others experiences.
Has anybody taken a couple days off from work to just cry and mourn? I am of the conviction to not try to "get over" it too soon. The longer one has a pet, it seems the bond is forged even stronger?
It is OK for you to be sad, and to mourn, and to cry, and to be mad. It is perfectly normal.

Do people seem like they need to "explain" what they are going through when a pet dies? If you lose a pet after many years of ownership and don't mourn -- is that normal behavior?

While experiencing the crying and anger, the lost sleep,. and the overall sadness, I feel it is time to remember the good times with your pet. The special times that make you laugh and make you cry - all at the same time.

I know in my heart -- and mind -- that I will see my pets again. I am trying to relive the times that we shared. Do you folks believe in looking at the situation not as a thing of the past, but as a part of who we are now?

I think during these times we have to let go of any and all guilt.

After their body is gone, their spirit, heart, and soul are here with us.

Perhaps finding your best memories re-enforces holding our friends close to our hearts, because that's where they are -- in our hearts.

I believe that the two of us will be together again someday.

In my case, when it soon happens, I believe he will be in heaven and that he will be happy, but I also believe that he will miss us as much as we will miss him.

I will HOPEFULLY still have my other cat for many more years? I can't imagine life without pets. I WILL ALWAYS have their presence in my life! I look forward to having you folks who are comfortable in doing so, please to share your experiences of how you dealt with it, with all of us.

Thanks in advance for your input.

Chronic Renal Failure & Menhaden Oil

Recent research findings have shown specific positive
nutritional results regarding the addition of
menhaden fish oil to a pets diet has provided
for animals diagnosed with Chronic Renal
Failure.

I have some personal experience in the CRF arena, as my own two 17 Year old brother cats have been on this product for over four years. One is a diabetic, and he unfortunately after fours years is now starting to loose his battle with diabetes and renal failure. However, my vet fully concurs that our OO fish oil has served to prolong my Harrys life by strengthening his immune system over these last four years. His brother, Max has chronic pancreatitus, and he also has done well on our product for over 4 years. My cats are elderly, and like we humans, getting older sometimes has no justice, as the normal aging process does have its onset quite more rapidly as we and our pets become seniors.

I will very soon be saying good bye to my devoted friend and companion, Harry. This has been perhaps the saddest last few days of my wife and my own lives. We know we must do what is best for Harry as the inevitable day is rapidly approaching. Disseminating from Ocean Omega business to relate to everday life, my wife and I can take some solace in the fact that we did the right thing by introducing Harry to our Ocean Omega Fish Oil some four years ago, to prolong a good quality of life.

Todays entry has been somewhat self serving in the way of some sort of a catharsis for me, thanks to the readers of this blog for engratiating me by listening/reading this and giving me that opportunity.

Sunday Morning Pet Jokes

I want to try and make this a weekly entry, probably on Sundays. Please do send your own pet jokes along. Thanks To Vickie C., for the inspiration of instilling some humor into this blog.

A good chess player
A man went to visit a friend and was amazed to find him playing chess
with his dog. He watched the game in astonishment for a while. "I can hardly
believe my eyes!" he exclaimed. "That's the smartest dog I've ever seen."

"Nah, he's not so smart," the friend replied. "I've beaten him three
games out of five."

Steven Wright on dogs
The other day, I was walking my dog around my building...on the ledge. Some
people are afraid of heights. Not me, I'm afraid of widths.

I had a dog once. I spilled spot remover on him, and now he's gone.

I put contact lenses in my dog's eyes. They had little pictures of cats on
them. Then I took one out and he ran around in circles.

I bought a dog the other day... I named him Stay. It's fun to call him...
"Come here, Stay! Come here, Stay!" He went insane. Now he just ignores me
and keeps typing. He's an East German Shepherd.

Do You Love Your Pet?

Omega 3 fatty acids as food ingredients have seen an onslaught of more food products listing omega 3 as an ingredient. Our Ocean Omega Plus version is GRAS approved=FOOD GRADE

Tropicana has announced that they will unveil their omega-3-rich orange juice this month, Kelloggs has put the ingredient in their healthy cereal Kashi, and I Can't Believe It's Not Butter, also has omega 3 listed as an ingredient.

Our job is to relay information that more pets need to enjoy the benefits of Omega 3 as well. If we are somewhat becoming aware that we need to change our own eating habits and overall dietary intake choices, than shouldn't the same apply for our pets?

The positive effects of omega-3 fatty acids are not really disputed, and both the American Heart Association and the FDA are in support of omega-3.

Ocean Omega is donating 5% of our September Sales to The Maine Dog Rescue Fund regarding The Buxton Kennel seizure of more than 250 dogs. We are encouraging pet owners especially, to enjoy our Special 15% Dog Rescue Sale Discount ( see earlier blog for details) to take this opportunity to help these rescue dogs, but also your companions as well, by trying our OO Products which will strengthen your pets immune system and enhance their overall good health.
