Conveying Bad News Regarding Price Increases

Frustrating News.jpg

I have written in past blog entries of the inevitablitiy that the volatile fish oil market would see significant price increases in early 2008. Although, I hadn't envisioned that the increase would be THIS early and THIS significant. Ocean Omega was informed today ( as we actually were placing an order from our source supplier), that we have incurred a dramatic price increase.

EVERYTHING IS CONSTANTLY GOING UP IN PRICE
food price increases pic.jpgWorld fish oil manufacturing prices skyrocketed during the past three months and even reached an average record level in November. World production and supplies cannot keep pace with increasing fish oil requirements....

For Oct/Sept 2007/08 industry analysts estimate world fish oil production to virtually possibly stagnate to a very large degree. World production and supplies cannot keep pace with increasing fish oil requirements - both for food, human and pet nutrition, and aquaculture production. This will continue to keep fish oil prices well above average also in 2008. Manufacturers will charge significantly higher average prices throughout 2008.....

Customers are becoming conditioned to both the need to raise prices and the
reasons for raising them. Still, for distributors, it's a tough scenario.

So, what's to blame for today's price increases? According to economists and
consultants, they're attributable to a global economic "perfect storm" that's
not just affecting fish oil product prices. The rising cost of steel,
plastics (resins), fuel, and shipping trickle down and affect
the cost of Ocean Omega supplies. Similarly, the United States must contend with the increasing raw materials demand from other countries such as China,
which drives up those costs.

When raw materials prices shoot up, every industry's prices are affected

The typical price hike notification sparks a complicated chain of events for
distributors such as ourselves, who must update pricing schedules, deliver the
unwelcome news to customers, and often, rethink the way we MUST pass along
costs. If we were lucky, we would have received a month's notice from the manufacturer before the increase actually had already taken effect.

A price increase is handed down from manufacturer to distributor for a specific product, the end user must unfortunately pay more for that product.
The process itself can be a challenge.

Informing the customer of the increase is no easy task, either. While
occasional price increases are expected, nobody wants to pay more. Customers
Most customers realize [prices] are going to go up, but when they continually go up many times in a short period of time, everybody suffers.

Everything you use has incurred some form of inflationary pricing,
there is little distributors can do when the entire marketplace is
experiencing rapid price increases. While manufacturers may absorb a greater
portion than distributors may have guessed, distributors don't have much
choice but to accept what their manufacturers pass down in the way of
increases.

Shopping Around

One consequence of raising end users' prices can be increased instances of
price "shopping" to the competition. Though this can be nerve-wracking for
distributors who worry about their competitors undercutting their pricing,
in today's economy, end users are finding that similar price increases have
gone into effect for other distributors, as well.

They're running a business just like we are. Our competitors will be having the same price increases as we do, and they too will have to deal with them.

More so why we will have to enhance the opportunity to reiterate the value we bring to the customer versus our competitors. My position gets more challenging daily, as we now have to reassess programs that we just instituted to save our clients money. Our price increases will be going into effect VERY SOON more to come as to how I will continue to attempt to devise cost savings programs to try and abate these impending price increases of our fish oil!New Product diversification is high on our priority board.

In response: I fully understand as all of us are experiencing the high cost of everything. Now it means we have to prioritize our expenditures. One solution is getting back to basics. I am on a fixed retirement income and so have done this slowly and am now getting down to the wire. It is imperative that my animals do not suffer because people are willing to spend enormous amounts of money to campaign, buy TV's to watch the super bowl and gazillions to put it on which we all know will ultimately come out of the taxpayer as does the coming election of our new President IDIOT. As voters we are getting what we deserve. We are listening to a bunch of money grubbing politicans and voting party politics instead of demanding that our representatives represent us. This goes for every State. Now we are paying the price and it will continue to go up.

The very fact that I have to decide what I can do without so that my dogs can have fish oil because China wants it and is willing to absorb so much that we cannot have a decent price in this country. The logic escapes me even more so as they have been poisoning us for such a long time. They process their foods with sewerage and yet we clamor to purchase it and brush our teeth with antifreeze. Tell me how does this make sense??

Yet we are voting people into office that will continue to allow and promote this. Where will it all end??? Will it all end????

I do not want to see this small business go out of business. I want the right to purchase a product that I find enhances the health of my dogs. I do not think I am being unreasonable in asking for this. We can put a stop to this kind of thing and we can have what we should if we are willing to make the change. We have to continue to promote this business. I know they will absorb as much of the cost as they can to allow us to have the product. I will continue to purchase as long as I can. I hope others will do the same.

I think perhaps we might elect a DOG for president and any breed will do. Even the Chinese ChowChow would work as they eat them.

Hi Barbara,

You are right on regarding SOMETHING has to be done to change what we all are experiencing. The political scene, with an impending election coming in November, is very trepidatious and scary.

I do not want to get on an "Oh Poor Me Syndrome" here, but I have written about the small proprietors trials and trepidations in other articles.

If you are not a big Pharma, the government could care less about you or your small business. Most mention by politicians of efforts to help the small business proprietors is simply fodder to play to delegates and constituents, and in most instances it is false campaign promises.

The American Flag is now manufactured in Taiwan for
C----- S---!

What is next for us??Will we become an unwilling emirate of China.

I try not to reflect negativism in any of my posts, but this current instance of rising prices is just yet another b---s---- pill that I am suppose to swallow.

I am trying my darndest to provide a quality pet healthcare product, at an ever increasing degree of difficulty to do so competitively.

I will forge on, and we will persevere. If this was just unique to Ocean Omega and fish oil, that would be one thing, but this has rapidly lapsed into ALL areas of our collective lives, higher taxes, higher fuel bills, higher food costs, pick a commodity they are ALL continually rising and escalating in price.

I will continue to fight the good fight, but I did take this as a serious sucker punch to the gut.

I appreciate you more than you will ever know, Barbara. You continue to stick with us through thick and thin, and I will assure you that I will continue to come up with savings plans to help abate this situation, and I will ALWAYS continue to help Promote Good Health In ALL Pets!

Thanks for your support we really appreciate it!

Bill H.

You won't lose me either; my animals are my kids. They deserve the best products to support their health. Keep up the good work.
