The Nine Lives of Cats
Well My wife and I have just returned from a huge consultation with our vet. It would appear that my cat Harry, who is suffering from diabetes induced renal failure, STILL has several potential quality months left.
After his readings for kidney failure were so poor last week ( 75% kidneys are gone), we decided to consider hydrating Harry intraveinously. The vet administered the first bag of hydration fluids today in her office. We also have Harry on food dedicated to kidney health, and she said to most definitely keep giving Harry our OO fish oil.She is confident this fish oil is serving his immune system quite nicely to fight his battle with renal failure.
This past week has been so tumultuous, as the beginning of the week looked pretty bleek. Then as the week progressed Harry seemed more perky, and he came upstairs last night to sleep with us on the bed (his normal routine), that he had abandoned for the previous last ten days or so? He also demanded that his head be rubbed in the middle of the night, again another normal routine.
Then at his breakfast time this morning, he raced to his dish for food, wrestling with his brother along the way, it was like he has revisited his youth. So we had tried to prepare ourselves all week long for his very possible euthanization today, but in lieu of his apparent turn around, we decided to give the hydration process a whirl.
The vet seemed to say, without having a crystal ball, that he may respond well and still have several months left. Again the reality of it is ; he is seventeen years old? It would appear he has utilized one of his proverbial nine lives already, hard to say how things will progress. Harry is in my office with me as I write this blog entry--purring to beat the band--so perplexing. Is he saying thanks for not saying good bye yet?? He appears to not be in pain--so we shall see.
I appreciate all the well wishes I have received over the last week, both here in this forum and privately. I will try to keep you abreast of the situation moving forward. At least for now, we don't have to say goodbye just yet.
