Consider Your Pets Mental Well Being Too
I have made several entries in this blog about the nutrition and diet concerns of our friends, but I also ask us all to reflect and realize that their mental state is just as vital to their overall well being.
I ask us all to remind ourselves that animals have no choice, but the choices we make for them. We need to be cognizant that they too are living, breathing creations, that much like ourselves, have to co-exist within the soceity and environment WE have created. They have the same emotions as we humans do, i.e. joy, love, pain, fear, rejection, etal.
Those of us who own and love pets and ALL animals, and have spent any significant time with them know this to be fact. We also know that dogs, especially, are willing to die to protect us, without giving a thought to their own lives. We have asked them to do things like lead the blind, provide comfort for the sick and convalescent, fight alongside our soldiers, and place themselves in danger along with our public servants,i.e., police officers and firemen.
Lets all treat our pets as we ourselves expect to be treated.Lets also strive to enhance their good mental health as well.

This is a very interesting subject. Having been closely entwined with dogs for over 20 years I have learned that while we spend time and resources caring for them we seldom address the mental health, thinking that is a human issue. It is also very prominent with dogs. People will ask about a dog's temperament. That is a dog's mental condition.
I have found that most of what we do is for us and not the dogs. We supply housing and soft beds and some of us even dress up our pets. Yikes!!! The whole make up of any dog consists of living conditions, care, training and nutrition. Feeding our animals correctly makes all the difference in their mental condition. The right balance of food and supplements is necessary to complete the whole dog.
So many times I hear from people who are having a behavior problem with their pets.My first question is what are you feeding. Therein lies much of the problem. It is a balancing act and each dog is different and will react differently depending on what you do.
There are no bad dogs. They are not born bad but with careful breeding come to us with all the parts necessary for a well rounded fine animal. It then becomes our job to mold this innocent clean slate into what we know it can and should be.
Nutrition!!!!! Dumping dry food into a dish is not nutrition. It is society's way of making our lives easier so we can do what??? Question???have you every read the ingredients on the bag of dog food you use and then looked up the ones you could not pronounce or understand??? Try it sometime. It can be very interesting. If you see the percentage of Omega 3 it will say somewhere that the amounts needed to sustain a healthy diet have not been determined. Why not might I ask. Did you put some in to make me happy? If you do not know what it is or does why are you adding it to the food? Because it is the latest trend? People are Omega 3 and 6 conscious but do they know why? I do!!
I have nine large game hunting dogs and they are mentally healthy. It is a daily game to not let them outsmart me. They do not have the junk in their brains that I have. Omega 3 fish oil has made that happen. Strong immune systems (better than mine) have made them what they are. I wish I were as mentally healthy as they are. I could overdose on fish oil but I doubt it would do the trick.

Hi Barbara,
Thanks for concurring with the fact of animals mental health as a key component in their collective overall well being and development.
I have taken fish oil supplements myself for over 4 years and in a totally unbiased statement, I do feel more mentally alert.
My sons girlfriend, who is pregnant with my first grandchild, is taking fish oil supplements; as there have been many well documented studies that show it can enhance the childs brain and mental acuteness both in the development process during the pregnancy, as well as after the actual birth.
Of course I am sure my grand daughter will be BRILLIANT!
Thanks,
Bill
