Thanks John for commenting on my blog entry. I know and admire greenpeaces efforts to try and maintain ecologically safe harvesting of all FISH species in the Ocean.

Obviously the tuna industry continues to be scrutinized for supposed high levels of mercury content. However, I think it safe to say that tuna continues to be in a lot of grocery carriages at checkout.

To answer your question, we gear our product to animals, although myself I personally take a fish oil pill everyday, I am still alive and kicking and passed my recent physical with flying colors.Also both of my own pets
( two brother cats) are on this product and have been for over 4 years, and they both just celebrated their 17th birthday and are doing quite nicely in the overall health arena.

If one searches ardently enough we can find negatively written analysis and studies about almost any ingredient or food stuffs.

All that I can tell you is that many well documented University studies have proven that menhaden oil is perhaps the most beneficial source of Omega 3's when considering supplements?

The company that you have referred to is a major supplier to the food industry and its oil is contained in such highly marketed products as butter, yogurt, breads, cereals, and many others.

They have taken meticulous steps in devising highly controlled and implemented filtration processes in controlling and filtering out such toxic chemicals.

Most independent studies that you so eloquently refer to usually are funded by other competing companies that offer the same types of fish oil supplements, its just that theirs may be derived from other species of fish. These too may or may not be perceived as highly toxic in their content composition.

It is truly in the eyes of the beholder and the proven results that in this case our clients seem to be at ease with.

I wanted to find out more about what Omega Pure had to say regarding this Greenpeace study. I am a consumer of The Omega Pure product myself, and have been for quite sometime. To abate my own concerns; I wrote a letter directly to the Company, please find their direct reponse to me listed below:

All of our menhaden fish oil products are safe. We have an ongoing rigorous quality control program supported by independent third-party labs. Our products meet all applicable standards set forth by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The global fish oil industry, including Omega Protein, has made significant investments in product testing and purification technologies as part of its commitment to safe and wholesome products.

The use of fish oil products has been studied extensively by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and other regulators in annual Total Dietary Surveys. In fact, in a January 15, 2004 statement, FDA said:

"FDA has evaluated data levels of various chemical contaminants, such as pesticides,polychlorinated biphenyls and dioxins in menhaden oil. Based on these data, FDA finds no basis for a safety concern from food uses of menhaden oil due to possible bioaccumulation of lipophilic chemical contaminants in the source fish."

The Greenpeace press release and the accompanying summary of a supposed chemical analysis of fish oil samples and fish meal contain serious inaccuracies,misleading statements, and significant deficiencies in the described research methods. This is not only the view of our internal technical experts, but also that of independent third-party scientists that we engaged to review the Greenpeace report.

To summarize, our products are safe and meet all regulatory standards established by the U.S. Food and Drug Agency. These products are not only safe but an abundance of research supports the health benefits of long chain omega 3 products.
