It is NOT who you know
It’s who knows you.
This morning I got an email from the editor of Today’s Dietitian magazine, a publication where I serve on the advisory board. My editor asked if I know of someone who could help a company introduce a new food product. Well, yes I did and sent an email recommending a dietitian who I met at a conference. I thought of Lauren because she sends very informative emails to a listserv I subscribe to, which makes me feel like I know her and her work. Why did Lauren get the recommendation from me, because I know her.
This weekend I got a phone call asking me to participate in the business plan competition at USM. Why was I asked? Because this person knew me from a class we took together.
Why do customers choose your products or services? Because they know you, or at least know of you. How do they get to know you? MARKETING!! You are marketing every time you send a thoughtful, helpful email to a listserv or comment on a blog like this. You are marketing when you serve on the board of directors of a charity or professional organization. You are marketing with every pleasant customer interaction and job well done. The more people who know you, the more you, your company, your products, your services will be sought after.
When people to know you, when they need what you offer, they will think of you. Be sure lots of people know you.
