Unique marketing promotions

Companies can get extremely creative with marketing promotions in an attempt to break through the clutter and get their message across. If done well, unique promotions can boost the visibility of a company, service or product in a way that also positively impacts the bottom line.

I came across an article entitled Promotions gone wild that outlines some "interesting" promotions used by companies. For example, one of the companies highlighted had a Beer for Bags event, in which the company promoted that they would accept beer for merchandise. The company’s marketing manager states there was a 10%-20% increase in sales due to this promotion along with an increased level of brand awareness nationwide.

We'll no doubt continue to see unusual marketing promotions methods as companies and brands look to grab consumer attention. In the end, the results of marketing promotions are what counts. A well executed promotion that meets objectives and/or provides a measurable return on investment can be an important piece of a company’s overall marketing strategy. What types of unique marketing promotions have you seen that either worked really well or that did not achieve their intended result?
