September is National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month

September is National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month. Sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA) Center for Substance AbuseTreatment (CSAT), Recovery Month provides a platform to celebrate people in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction and those who support them.

National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month logoNow in its 18th year, the annual observance is celebrated at events throughout the nation. This year's theme, "Join the Voices for Recovery: Saving Lives, Saving Dollars," asks people to take notice of the financial and human costs of substance use disorders, and to understand the benefits that investing in treatment can have on those who enter recovery, their families and the larger community.

In Maine, Governor John Baldacci and the mayors of Augusta and Bangor have officially proclaimed September as Alcohol & Drug Addiction Recovery Month. Recovery Celebration!, sponsored by the Maine Alliance for Addiction Recovery (MAAR), is planned for Saturday, September 15th at Capitol Park in Augusta. In addition to a rally, various activities will be available simultaneously, including live music, recovery topic forums, children's activities and a refreshment tent.
