The state has hired a new director for the Office of Innovation, according to the Department of Economic and Community Development.
Catherine Renault will take over the office, which was created in 2004 to coordinate the state's efforts in research and development and encourage collaboration among its higher educational and nonprofit research institutions and the business community.
Renault has more than 16 years experience in innovation-based economic development. Renault served as a project manager for RTI International, a think-tank based in Research Triangle Park, N.C., and as a senior research associate in the office of economic development at the University of North Carolina, where she assisted in the evaluation of Maine's research and development sector.
She also has served as managing director for the Virginia Center for Innovative Technology.
Renault has a bachelor's degree from Radcliffe College, a master's of business administration from the University of Virginia and a doctorate from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
Renault replaces Janet Yancey-Wrona, who left the office in September to become the chief operating officer of Aiko Pharmaceuticals in southern Maine.
