Casco: Hancock Lumber, family pledge $100,000

Hancock Lumber and its family members have pledged $100,000 to Camp Sunshine in Casco. Hancock Lumber, The Carol J. and K. David Hancock Charitable Trust, Carol Hancock, and Alison and Kevin Hancock have each pledged $25,000 to the nonprofit organization.

Kevin Hancock, chairman, president and chief executive of Hancock Lumber, said his company has long been a strong supporter of Camp Sunshine's mission. Camp Sunshine provides a camp vacation at no charge to children with life-threatening illnesses and their families.

Camp Sunshine recently kicked off a $14.5 million endowment campaign. Combined with other commitments, the donation from Hancock Lumber and the Hancock family brings the total raised by Camp Sunshine to $5.2 million. Other contributors include the New Balance Foundation and the TD Banknorth Charitable Foundation.



Portland: Woodard & Curran wins award for recycling

Woodard & Curran, a Portland-based consulting, engineering and operations firm, has won the eco-Excellence Award for recycling from Ecomaine, formerly known as Regional Waste Systems. Ecomaine's recycling committee reviewed award entries from 12 communities before selecting Woodard & Curran as the overall winner.

In addition to paper, plastic, glass, cardboard and metal separation, Woodard & Curran recycles batteries and CDs, composts its coffee grinds, and is in the process of creating purchasing guidelines to reduce waste at its source. Used office supplies are donated to schools through Ruth's Renewable Resources in Scarborough and obsolete computer components are given away through freecycle.org.

Ecomaine is a nonprofit waste-disposal company in Portland owned and operated by 21 municipalities.

The competition was open to individuals, groups and businesses. The entries have been compiled into a free handbook and are available by contacting jhoover@ecomaine.org or by calling 773-1738.



Portland: ImmuCell reports drop in second-quarter sales

ImmuCell Corp., a Portland biotech firm, is reporting a 12 percent drop in sales during the second quarter, compared to the same period a year ago.

For the three months ended June 30, product sales decreased by $99,000, to $749,000, in comparison to the same period in 2005. For the six months ended June 30, product sales decreased by 4 percent, or $89,000, to $2.2 million, in comparison to the same period in 2005.

Net income was 11 cents per diluted share in both of the six-month periods ended June 30, 2006, and 2005.

ImmuCell had net income of $16,000 for the three months ended June 30, compared to net income of $79,000 during the same period in 2005. For the six months ended June 30, the company had net income of $322,000, compared to net income of $339,000 during the same period in 2005.
